About the Author
JACK D. SCHWAGER is a recognized industry expert in futures and hedge funds and the author of a number of widely acclaimed financial books. He is currently a principal of PortfolioFit (portfoliofitadvisors.com), an advisory firm that specializes in constructing tailor-made futures and FX managed account portfolios for clients, and the co-portfolio manager for the ADM Investor Services Diversified Strategies Fund, a portfolio of futures and FX managed accounts. Mr. Schwager is also one of the founders of Fund Seeder (Fundseeder.com), a platform designed to find undiscovered trading talent worldwide and connect unknown successful traders with sources of investment capital.
Mr. Schwager is the inventor of the Jack Schwager Commodity Index (JSCI) family, a set of dynamically adjusted commodity indexes that incorporate spread structure, systematic inputs, and volatility-based risk adjustments. The indexes are scheduled to be launched in early 2014 in cooperation with Aquantum AG and UBS.

Market Wizards Principles Condensed

Jack Schwager has done a great job condensing the best of his four Market Wizard books into this one smaller work and staying true to the series. While the larger books focus on the full interviews of the Market Wizards and share the best that they had to offer readers from those interviews this book distills the best of the best principles, examples, and advice into one quick and easy read.
If you have read the other four books in the Market Wizard series with the full interviews there is very little new content here but it is an excellent quick review of those books and it is always good to study the concepts over and over to solidify what works in the trading world until you internalize it mentally.
If you have not read the other books this is an outstanding introduction to the Market Wizard series and I highly recommend after this one to go on and read the other four which I consider some of the very best trading books ever written.
The book covers these main principles of successful trading:
Resilience to come back from early losses and account blow ups.
Focusing on what really matters in trading success.
Trading a method that fits your own personality.
Trading with an edge.
The harder you work at trading the luckier you will get.
The homework to develop a methodology should be hard but the actual trading itself should be simple.
Mental and emotional control is key while winning or losing.
Managing the risk to avoid failure and pain.
Discipline to follow your trading plan.
Confidence and independence as a trader.
Being a good loser.
Be patient with winning trades and impatient with losing trades.
The right way to position size.
Comfortable trades are usually losing trades while the more uncomfortable trades are usually the winners.
Emotions are dangerous masters to the trader.
You have to evolve as a trader or eventually fail.
It is not the news but how the market reacts to that news.
Learning through mistakes.
Passion for trading is the fuel for eventual success.
These principles are explained through the words of some of the greatest long term traders out there.
Excellent book for new traders and an outstanding resource for experienced traders to review each year to keep themselves on the right track. Easily one of my new top recommendations for new traders.

Another Book Review from the Aleph Blog

Over time, I have reviewed a decent number of "Little Books." I have a theory as to why I like some of them, and not others. I like the ones that take a relatively narrow concept and summarize it. An example of that would be Mark Mobius' book on emerging markets, or Vitaliy Katsenelson's book on sideways markets.
But when a concept is broad and not friendly to summary, a "little book" is not so useful. As examples, John Mauldin's book on Bulls Eye Investing went too many directions, and Scaramucci on Hedge Funds could not adequately summarize or describe a large topic.
There are other "Little Books" that I have read that did not even get a review... probably about 10% of the books I read in entire never get the review written because they were so bad, or just hard to decide what the book was. (What do you want to be if you grow up dear? ;) )

Jack Schwager is generally a good writer, and expert at talking with clever investors in order to break down the main points of how they invest (without giving away the store). In this "Little Book" he goes a different direction, and looks for commonalities among various clever investors, with each chapter covering a different topic.
My view is that most clever investors fall into one of a bunch of categories, much of which boils down to time horizon for the preferred investment. Going down the continuum: day trader, swing trader, longer-term trader, momentum-oriented growth investor, growth investor, growth-at-a-reasonable-price investor, and value investor. After that, you might differentiate between those that go for relative vs absolute returns.
As such, the book posits a bunch of topics that apply to different groups of clever investors. I think it would have been better to have segmented the book by classes of investors, because then you could have a coherent set of commonalities for each main investor type.
As it is, the book relies heavily on anecdotes, which isn't entirely a bad thing; nothing motivates a topic like a story. But if you were reading this to try to develop your own philosophy of managing money in order to fit your own personality, you might have a hard time doing it with this book. I think you would be better off reading one of Schwager's longer books, and reading about each clever investor separately. At least then you get to see the full package for an investor, and how the different aspects of investing in a given style work together.

If you just want a taste of what a wide variety of different investors do to be effective, this could be the book for you. For most other people, get one of Schwager's longer books, and read about the different investors as individual chapters.

Wonderful experience and lessons

I had the opportunity to read the first book of the series Market Wizards and I felt very impressed with the amount of useful information that I could extract from the multiple interviews made by the author. Well this time I've found something even more precious, a resume of the most important features that successful traders have in common compiling the work of over 20 years, It's a wonderful book full of important insights made by probably one of the best trading authors in the entire world. Important tips inside that would be very useful for beginners up to professional traders.
