My New Favorite Short Romance

Here it is! My new, favorite, hot off the press, short romance. Usually with short stories I am left wanting more but Love at First Date left me completely satisfied. Well, I maybe could have used a smooch more kissing (wink, wink), but honestly this book was awesome. I loved it. It was full of happy smiles.

This book goes along with My Last Blind Date (which I also loved) . It was fun to catch a glimpse of Rachel from that book as well as get to know Ellen more in this book. I love the setting in Sacramento. (hello, Sacramento!) That's my home stomping grounds. Now a days, when I get to Sacramento, I know I'm almost home.

One of the things I love about Susan's writing is that it just feels real. The character's dialogue and interactions are easy and comfortable reading. There is humor and there is sizzle. Perfect, right? If you want an short evening read to curl up with, look no further.

Better Date than Never

In Love at First Date, the first book in Susan Hatler's Better Date than Never series, Ellen is thirty and wants to find true love. After her mother's past relationship failures, Ellen wants to use scientific methods to find the man of her dreams. Given her abandonment issues, Ellen relies on questionnaires and virtual matching to take the uncertainty out of romance.

When Chester the Chewing Canine chomps into the contents of Ellen's purse, she panics. Her friend Rachel adores the dog, and will kill Ellen if he overdoses on her lip gloss. Thankfully, Chester did not chew her cell phone. Ellen frantically careens to the local animal hospital, hacking dog in tow.

Ellen wants to force order onto chaos. She finds her objective criteria and scientific methods exploding in their own version of a big bang when she meets a handsome, non-vetted stranger over Chester's hacking and trails of drool.

The short work is entertaining and fun. The characters are believable and likeable. Rachel, Ellen's best friend, is obsessed with her dog's mental health and happiness. Ms. Hatler also offers humor. For example, one of Ellen's suitors invites her out to the Chinese restaurant Wok N’ Roll.

Cute funny clean story romance

A cute short romance about looking for love in all the wrong places only to find it right in front of you where you least expected. People can be too much alike or think they want something they do not. Sometimes compatibility is over rated we can be too compatible or think we want one thing when in fact it isn’t what we want at all.

Elle felt she needed to find someone compatible she signed up on Detailed Dating site. She did her profile and got her dates. The dates were all wrong she found what she really wanted was what she didn’t want at all.

This was a cute little read that is a funny clean reads about finding the mate of your dreams at first site. If you want an easy fast fun read this is the book for you.

About the Author
Brainard Carey was born in Manhattan, New York, and grew up in Yonkers. After attending undergraduate art school at SUNY Purchase, he moved to Rhode Island and opened a gallery and began publishing a literary magazine. Carey then moved back to New York City, where he met Delia Bajo, and cofounded Praxis, which was invited to be in the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and to be in a solo show there in 2007, as well as other venues around the world. Carey also has a mentoring/ educational business that helps artists to write grants, exhibit, and advance their careers. He splits his time between New York City and a studio in New Haven, Connecticut, where he has a radio show on Yale radio WYBC called The Art World Demystified.

Practical, real, encouraging

Brainard Carey's "Art Mentor" emails were the most encouraging, relevant and practical art advice I have ever received. He is an invaluable resource when it comes to thinking beyond the canvas or the conventional. It is because of his ideas and perspective (be courageous, simply ask, develop relationships and community) that I launched a non-profit arts collective specifically targeting an ignored demographic. A year later we boast a small membership of 30 to 50 national and international dynamic females over the age of 40, we have a growing social media following and we have a familiar name within our Los Angeles arts community.

I don't think I would have had the courage, or downright audacity to what I am doing (and rather successfully) had I not had access to Brainard Carey. I believe his ideas and advice are some of the best and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any artist at any level of their career. It truly is a must have for you library.

Really basic, mostly just common sense reminders.

I read this book with great anticipation for specific business insights into the art industry. I was hoping to get practical advice that would help me understand what needs to be considered and tackled to make a career shift to art. I got neither.

For context, I've got 20 years of business operations experience in high tech, but am looking to turn my weekend art hobby into a second career of sorts. Mentioning this b/c my perspective might be different than others reading this book without much hands-on business experience, i.e. what struck me as common sense might not be the case for others.

For example, the author assumes you don't have any basic writing skills, spending an inordinate amount of time talking through how to create bios. I agree, that's an important consideration, but it doesn't warrant the better part of an entire chapter. There's also a lot of time spent on discussing how to network within the art industry. Again, another worthy topic, but the details were far too basic. For example, there's a lot of discussion about how to convince a curator to take 15 minutes to have coffee with you, but very little time spent reviewing other industry specific networking opportunities. Another example of "light" information was the time spent suggesting you chat with your local art gallery owners about possible representation. Another instance of common sense stuff that focused more on the "what" and not enough on the "how".

This book struck me as very basic and lacked much punch. If you're looking for very broad strokes, and/or are fresh out of school, I can understand a higher rating for the content. But if you're looking for a real business savvy perspective, continue your search.

Don't wait around for success--make it come to you!

Brainard Carey is that rarity in the art world: someone who knows how to sell himself without selling out. The key is Carey's imagination, perseverance, and genuine enthusiasm, which shine through this book. He offers the encouragement AND the practical advice that will help you move yourself and your art to wider exposure and real success. Unlike many other artists, he's not embarrassed about the concept of making money--in fact, artists are the ones who SHOULD be making the money! But there's no question that public and financial success requires you to put yourself out there, over and over. Artists MUST learn how to market themselves well--it has become part of the job of being an artist. And this is where Carey shines. It's not just what he says but how he says it; he's a great model for marketing yourself while BEING yourself. Although I'm a musician, not a visual artist, after a friend recommended this book I was inspired to launch a Kickstarter.com campaign to make an album--and I raised over $6,000! Carey's words helped get me off my rear. I recommend this book to artists of ALL types.

Art of the Formula 1 Race Car Is a Great Book

First of all, I must admit that I am not objective about this book because my son was its editor. On the other hand, I have followed and read about Formula 1 racing for forty years and this is one of the best books I have seen. The basic concept is to show the beauty of Formula 1 car designs. To do this, photographer James Mann shot eighteen cars in studios around the UK. The photographic emphasis is on both the overall chassis design as well as details of the engines, driver's compartments, etc. All of Mann's photographs are beautiful. In addition there are historical photos from the era of each car. The cars range from the Alfa Romeo of the first F1 season, 1950, to the McLaren MP4-23 of 2008. Thus it covers the entire Formula 1 era. The text is by Stuart Codling, a highly regarded UK based motorsports journalist. In addition, there is commentary by former Formula 1 designer Gordon Murray. The sum of all of these contributions is a one-of-a-kind book that is both very beautiful to look at and also a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend it.

The first user review says that the technical summaries are "fraught with errors". Well, there are exactly two errors. On page 95, the engine displacement should be 2,993 cc rather than 3,993; and on page 170, the year for the Jordan 191 should be 1991 rather than 1981 (the correct year is included in Codling's main text however).

Not as expected

From the photos on the front of the book, you would think that the projects shown would be in the book.. Some of them are, but not all of them. The ones that I was most interested in were not. Just pictures inside with no instructions on how to assemble them. I'm not an idiot as far as trying to figure out how they were done, but I think it's a little missleading.

Great Starter Book for Reusing, Repurposing and Recycling Pallets!

When I got this book earlier this week, I have to admit I was a tad bit disappointed because at first glance, it seemed sparse as to ideas, the number of projects and instructions. But as I delved further into the book, the more substance to it I saw. Chris Gleason covers this subject very thoroughly, from choosing the right kind of pallets to be used (there are certain pallets to be avoided, for those have been chemically treated and therefore not safe for use indoors; others are too splintery or full of nails to be safely worked with, etc.), to taking them apart for your projects, the tools to use,with an in-depth overview of what to use and what they're used for and so on.

Furthermore, Mr. Gleason provides several projects in the book with detailed, concise step-by-step instructions and lists of materials needed for each project, such as a mirror frame, a coffee table, an outdoor loveseat, chair, and even an ukele! He also peppers the book with interesting factoids such as, "Old pallets can be ground up to make insulation, landscaping mulch, and construction materials", or "Due to sustainable logging practices, the number of newer trees each year exceeds the number of harvested trees".

I also love the photos of various objects that were made with wood pallets, such as an accent ceiling, bed headboards, wall art and others that are creative and meant to inspire. And inspire they have... I am itching to get going on some of these projects, and so will you. This is a must-read if you're wanting to make things for your home and garden easily and very cheaply.

for running a private cloud

You have undoubtedly heard all the news about cloud computing. A trendy catchphrase that encapsulates some substantial hardware in data centers hooked to the Internet, like Amazon's offering, for example. But this book shows how it is possible to have your own corporate cloud, without having to reinvent many methods. OpenNebula is an open source approach that the text strongly recommends (hypes?) as being very modular and interoperable. Toraldo suggests that you can avoid locking in your code into some vendor's proprietary API.

Even more, there is no preference for a given hypervisor. You might have already used a hypervisor from VMware, which is perhaps the dominant supplier of hypervisors in the marketplace. Reflecting this commercial reality, OpenNebula can handle several types of VMware hypervisors. But it also supports Xen, which is the oldest open source hypervisor for linux.

Chapter 2 discusses the setup of OpenNebula on your hardware. The requirements are fairly general and the installation steps seem straightforward. While chapter 5 is the launching point for broad usage, once all the install steps are done. In this chapter, the parts about running virtual machines can be illuminating. While there could be many settings, OpenNebule picks a set of defaults that typically work for most case, which reduces the administrative load on you.

You may want to keep in mind the figure on page 127, in chapter 5. It is the state diagram for all the VM states. It helps you, by letting you refer to it as needed, to understand the running of a VM.

In depth, well written book mostly for engineers

Book is very compact in size, taking into account so much of content about OpenNebula. Last two years I have been installing, configuring and running OpenNebula for the research with few dozens of servers. The book has very helpful theoretical and mostly technical content.

For my work I referred to online documentation, blogs, OpenNebula forum and mailing lis. Finally, Giovanni Toraldo made an excellent work, collecting all of the content needed for very beginner to industry expert for set up, manage ad maintain OpenNebula cloud. It is very nice to have all content in one place. Book makes very easy to understand cloud internals, not only for OpenNebula but for all existing open source cloud solutions.

Also, I found "Tips and tricks" boxes very useful. They remind me easy traps which beginner can fall into during initial set up. Notes in the boxes are very handy, since it might save your days of digging down to the problem, reading forum posts or Googling. Latter was the case for me. So, content of the book requires keen attention, especially notes boxes.

It is great to have a book like this where author shares his insight experience and knowledge about open source project. Usually, thorough explanation of software modules, script and interaction between parts are not explained in the documentation, and almost impossible to find. This book includes in depth explanation of parts of the OpenNebula, such as image transfer manager, hooks, Ganglia integration and etc. I highly recommend this book for everyone getting into the cloud, regardless of their level of experience.

Since the information is structure as a guide, it is easy to follow and learn how to manage OpenNebula. Moreover, every time that a related technology is mentioned, like GlusterFS, Glanglia, or Amazon Web Services, it goes with an explanation of how to install and configure it to ensure the integration with OpenNebula.

I found particularly interesting the last two sections, where it is explained how to go beyond the limits of you private cloud by using resources offered by public clouds (such as Amazon Web Services). In addition, it details the way to convert your private cloud into a public one and how to manage, from a centralized place, a large infrastructure as a federation of clouds.

About the Author

Michael J. English is a partner of Best Practices Benchmarking & Consulting LLC and a retiree of GTE. He is the coauthor of Benchmarking for Best Practices, which is highly regarded by performance improvement practitioners around the world. English is also a long-time member of the American Society for Quality.

William H. Baker Jr. recently retired as the knowledge management and benchmarking champion for the Raytheon Company. Currently vice president for programs in the Association for Manufacturing Excellence-Southwest Region, he is a recipient of the American Productivity and Quality Center's Award for Excellence in Corporate Benchmarking and a three-time recipient of the APQC Study Award for Outstanding Benchmarking Studies.

Superior reference text

This book is full of insight, if you can penetrate its academic heft. Michael J. English and William H. Baker Jr. clearly have thought long and deeply about knowledge management and the practice of knowledge transfer. They've done their research, they define their terms in depth and they provide abundant examples. As a reference text, this book is superior. However, despite the authors' overarching metaphor of the "knowledge transfer race," the book is so dense it is easy to imagine executives shelving it as an authoritative sourcebook, but implementing suggestions from less informed but more accessible authors. More than once, English and Baker slow down to answer all objections and define their terms until their momentum grinds to a halt. Other attempts to serve the reader stall similarly. For example, their attempt to help readers classify best practices results in a 14-page outline. Yes, each point in the outline indicates a potentially valuable action, but getAbstract - while regarding this book with respect and admiration - fears few readers will make it through such exhaustive explanations, and recommends it primarily as a serious reference work that will reward your efforts to penetrate it.
