"Two Powers in Heaven" was a very early category of heresy. It was one of the basic categories by which the rabbis perceived the new phenomenon of Christianity and one of the central issues over which Judaism and Christianity separated. Segal reconstructs the development of the heresy through prudent dating of the stages of the rabbinic traditions. The basic heresy involved interpreting scripture to say that a principal angelic or hypostatic manifestation in heaven was equivalent to God. The earliest heretics believed in two complementary powers in heaven, while later heretics believed in two opposing powers in heaven. Segal stresses the importance of perceiving the relevance of rabbinic material for solving traditional problems of New Testament and gnostic scholarship, and at the same time maintains the necessity of reading those literatures for dating rabbinic material. When Spanish soldiers entered the city in 1519, Moctezuma mistook their leader, Hernan Cortes, for a god and offered him gold and jewels. The arrival of a second fleet of Spanish ships led to the battle that took place on "The Sad Night"; Moctezuma was killed and the Spaniards, attempting to escape with a cache of gold, were chased and defeated by the Aztecs. Mathews neatly distills the intricate details of this skirmish, observing that there were many casualties on both sides, and that the victors "did not know that this was the last battle they would win." Though the figures in the paintings are small, the action is clearly discernible. Indeed, children can "read" the story from these expressive illustrations. The final three pages of the book give more detailed information on the Aztecs and Cortes, including an explanation of the Aztec calendar. Similar in narrative and illustrative style to Deborah Nourse Lattimore's Why There Is No Arguing in Heaven (1989) and The Flame of Peace (1987, both HarperCollins), this title has the distinction of combining myth with historical fact in a particularly successful manner. The book climaxes with the bloody battle known as the Sad Night, when the Aztecs fought off the Spaniards for control of their city, though the closing pages relate the Aztecs' eventual downfall and the legacy of their city as the site of Mexico City today. Inspired by Aztec designs, the stylized artwork includes repeated geometric patterns and the depiction of people and animals in silhouette. The last illustration is a cutaway view of modern Mexico City above and below ground, showing Aztec artifacts still buried beneath buildings and above subway tunnels. A great introduction to the story of the Spanish invasion

I will say first of all that this is a bloody and somewhat gruesome story in parts. But war is bloody and gruesome. It was appropriate for my six year old boy. This was an interesting story (with fabulous pictures) that even teaches how the picture on the Mexican flag came about. I learned something by reading it and it fueled my son's interest in the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas.

A Truely Sad Story

This historically accurate story of the end of the Aztec Empire in Mexico is well written and engrossing. The history it contains is better suited for oder children, but the format is engaging for younger readers. It's the kind of book that made this adult reader want to learn more about the Aztec and Hernan Cortes!

a classic for many many years

This book has been beloved by my kids and nieces/nephews to read each and every year, from age 4 to age 13. I just attended the Aztec exhibit at the British Museum in London, and realized I knew and understood most of the exhibit from reading "The Sad Night". My mom and I were amazed at how historically accurate the story and drawings were to the Aztec iconography, while still being really interesting to look at and read for kids.
This is such a worthwhile book because kids keep coming back to it. It is so well done. Yes, its somewhat bloody in its story of war and conquest, but that's what really happened. I'm going to get it for our school library.

I was born at la Varenne-Saint-Hilaire, on the 17th of June of I don't know what year. It was on a 17th of a month I no longer remember that the civil court pronounced the divorce between Maxime Aubry, artist, and Pauline Mutel, his wife. It was again upon a 17th, the 17th of October, 1907, that I was found murdered by an unknown hand, in the city of Dieppe, at the end of the Quay Henri IV. And once more, by a providential chance, it was on the 17th of last month that I again gave my name to Pauline Mutel, my divorced wife!

Superstitious minds are at liberty to assign to this fateful number 17 an importance in the occurrences which I do not recognise!

Clients have included Shell, Federal Express, Office Depot, MetLife, Boeing and Volkswagen of North America. Many of Jeff's consultant activities were associated with The Disney Institute, a best-practices institution modeled on America's first corporate university. While there, Jeff was responsible for building Disney's customer service and creativity programs. The models, concepts, and examples of that program were later introduced to corporate America in Be Our Guest, a popular benchmarking title published by The Disney Institute, with a forward by Michael Eisner. As chief Learning Architect of The Public Strategies Group, Jeff has been focused on the establishment and support of training and development for federal, state and local entitles. This includes a multi-year focus in transforming Federal Student Aid for The Department of Education. As a keynote speaker he has addressed a wide variety of topics for groups like Miami-Dade, The City of Sammamish and the governor's office in Iowa. Jeff Kober does a great job at showing the inner workings at Disney from a fans viewpoint, then explains how things work and why. The best part, though, is how he shows you how you can apply these practices to improve your own business. I highly reccomend his book.

This study complements and extends the findings of Swetz's previous book, Was Pythagoras Chinese? An Examination of Right Triangle Theory in Ancient China.

Ellie Anderson is the main character. Her best friend is Sarah Wilkins.

I like these books mostly for the fun, cozy relationships and the fun times the teens have.

Ellie has a job after school at the library, shelving books. She meets an interesting guy named Brian. A young girl was murdered two years ago. Ellie has visions pertaining to this girl. She is determined to solved the mystery of the murder with her visions. Part of the mystery is what does Brian, if anything, have to do with the murder? And what about Brett? These questions are answered in this book.

Ellie Anderson has visions of things that happened in the past and things that will happen in the future. Ellie thought her visions were really cool, until they meddled with her love life. Ellie promises herself that her new life in Shadyside will not be ruined by visions. But Ellie's promise is broken when her visions lead her to a dead body in the Fear Street Woods. Now she must find the murderer before he finds her first.
When I finished reading this book, all I could say was 'Wow.' It was a fantastic Fear Street book! It had several different genres. Horror, mystery, suspense, romance, and adveenture. Let's not forget the surprise ending. That was shocking. Out of all of the main characters in the book, it was that guy. You'll never be able to guess it.

I think the mind reader is a real good book because it keeps you geussing on who did it and how did they do that. What I like about the book the most is that the main character. Ellie deals with stuff that every day people whould do just not finding the bodys and have visons but some people do have visons. I could read this book 1,000 times and I bet if you read it once you would read it again. so if I were you I would read it.
