Nice handbook for everyday IR/Raman interpretation

I work as an analytical chemist mainly using IR and Raman for unknown identification and for studying various chemical reactions.

This book, together with the Infrared and Raman Characteristic Group Frequencies: Tables and Charts (Spiral-bound)by George Socrates, are the two books that I use almost on a daily base. With the electronic IR/Raman library becoming more and more popular, it is no longer necessary for your to remember all the peak frequencies/intensity. But having a book that compiles all the group frequencies and explains how the various chemical environments could affect the vibrational modes is a must-have if you are a serious vibrational spectroscopist.

i usually use the book by Lin-Vien when I want a systematic description of a particular modes or a class of molecules. I use the Infrared and Raman Characteristic Group Frequencies: Tables and Charts for its nice charts. I like both. But Lin-Vien's book does appear to be a little 'ancient' compared to the one from George Socrates.

My world has been forever changed by the events that culminated in the "Hill-Thomas hearing" six years ago.��I am no longer an anonymous, private individual, and my name has become synonymous with sexual harassment.��To many I represent the courage to come forward and disclose a painful truth--a courage which thousands of others have found for themselves since the hearings.��To others I represent the debasement of the public forum, at best a pawn, at worst a perjurer.

But I am no longer content to leave the assessment to others, for they cannot know what I experienced--what I felt, saw, heard, and thought.��Whatever others may say, I must address these questions for myself.��I did not choose the issue of sexual harassment; it chose me.��And, having been chosen, I have come to believe that it is up to me to try and give meaning to it all.

Read this and you will know that HIll was telling the truth

When these hearings took place I was a busy 45 year old married working mother. I was somewhat interested in politics and was able to watch part of the hearings on TV. At first I wasn't sure what to think or who to believe but ultimately I decided that Clarence Thomas was the more credible, mostly because I couldn't understand why Professor Hill would have followed him to another job if he had done what she accused him of doing. As time went by I came to see what a poor choice for the Supreme Court Thomas turned out to be, yet I never reconsidered my opinion about Hill until recently when I read the book "Blinded by the Right" by David Brock. This led me to read Hill's book. Today I am 34 years older than I was when the confirmation hearings were being held, and in spite of being a somewhat privileged white woman, I've learned a lot in the intervening time about how the world works, including sexual discrimination, racism, and right wing politics. Having read these two books, I regret that I wasn't wise enough to understand at the time what was going on. I am so sorry that Anita Hill was treated so badly by so many people in power and that so many people like myself were fooled by the campaign that was waged against her. What she did required immense courage and not becoming embittered by the result required immense grace.

Art book of pin-ups and character art

Here's the companion artbook Phantom Breaker, a 2D fighting game created by company 5pb. The Japanese game and the original artbook were released in June 2011. This book is actually the English translated version by Udon of the Japanese edition ファントムブレイカー公式ビジュアルワークス.

Note that some websites list this book with the title Phantom Breaker: Official Design Works but on the actual cover it's actually Phantom Breaker: Official Visual Works

The book collects the pin-up illustrations, character designs (profiles & sketches), event artwork including some discarded concept and finally and interview with game creator Masaki Sakari (盛政樹) and freelance illustrator Hiro Suzuhira (鈴平ひろ).

The artworks are beautiful. The book starts with full page illustrations of the characters outside of the game world, meaning they are in different costumes at times. Some are fan-service illustrations with characters appearing more fleshy but there's no nudity of course.

Character designs are with the typical Japanese style faces, anime like colouring. There's a somewhat gothic vibe at times. Costumes are pretty cool for the female characters and the male characters pale by comparison. I guess it's not surprising there are some maid inspired dresses. The ones I like are with the more outrageous costume designs, such as Cocoa's.

Each character has their own brief profile, coloured illustrations of various poses and commentary from the designer. There aren't a lot of fighting poses for a fighting game which I think would have made the art more dynamic.

If you're into pin-up illustrations or a fan of the game, then this book should appeal to you.

Just Buy It !!!

Some people collect stamps, coins, baseball cards or comic books. I don't do that. Instead, I collect all the best art books. If you collect art books like I do I would say definitely buy this one. The artwork is just amazing!!! If I could give this more than 5 stars, I definitely would. This really is a "must have book"

I would recommend this to anyone reading this review. If you're thinking about getting this book, go on youtube first and search for the video of this book. You can get a better idea if you will like this book or not.

I also own almost all the other Udon Entertainment art books and I would like to take the time to recommend them all. In my opinion Udon is just the best of the best. I don't work for them. I don't get paid by them. I'm just a fan of their art books.

.Coming at a time when scarce attention is being paid to new sources for a political impulse in the West, Performance as Political Act seeks to re-embody the political subject, arguing that when the mind has been dominated by mass communications as in Western capitalism, the body emerges as a site of opposition. Martin's study goes against the conventional wisdom of the three areas it seeks to synthesize: politics, the performing arts, and the body. Whereas most left political studies presuppose consciousness as necessary for political activity, the author contends that consciousness is inadequate without political feeling and senses which are the province of the body. The performing arts, generally viewed from the audience's perspective, are here seen from the standpoint of the performers because the power of social relations, Martin asserts, lies ultimately in performance. Finally, the body, viewed in the relevant literature as either a natural, individual essence or as subjugated to mind is established here as a social, historical agent of political activity. Two distinct, yet related, studies form the basis for Martin's contention that an alternative politics must be based on the body engaged in performance: first, an inside view of the making of a modern dance displays the sources of power for a social body; and second, a comparison of political theatre in the Soviet twenties and American sixties identifies the way in which the body's potential for politics changes. A sustained theoretical discussion that critiques semiotic and phenomenological approaches to the body and outlines a body politics links the two studies.

Performing artists concerned with the political aspects of their work; sociologists engaged in the study of problems of culture and everyday life; and literary theorists involved with the application of the tools of literary criticism to political problems will find that the perspectives expressed in this groundbreaking examination of the contemporary theory and history of the body form a compelling argument for the extent to which the body can become a source of political activity.

Not just Bad, Disgusting

Without one word about how to condition a dog to understand a command, Edwards tells his readers to give the command, and if the dog doesn't do it, use the whip. What?

I bought this book because it had a chapter about using a dog whistle. If the reviews of people shopping for dog whistles are any indication, dog whistles are an idiot magnet anyway. "I bought this to shut up my neighbor's dog, and it keeps on howling." "I blow this thing over and over, and my dog won't come." With "training" guides like this there will still be dogs raised without benefit of the amazing (and scientifically sound) improvements in understanding animal behavior.

Please buy a book about clicker training. Owners can easily learn how to teach their dogs to understand words. But it is the owner who must learn before holding the poor dog accountable for something he can't possibly understand. If, after reading any of the very fine books about conditioning behavior with positive reinforcement, a dog owner can't figure out how to shape hunting behaviors without punishment, the poor dog shouldn't be expected to understand either.

For clicker training try Karen Pryor, Kyra Sundance, Patricia McConnell, Phd.

For learning to read your dog's body language in case you mistakenly believe your dog is just fine with rough handling, try Turid Rugaas.

About the Author
Coordinating editor of this book, is a socio-economist at CIRAD. Since 2010, he is responsible for the program "Trajectories, differentiations and inequalities in rural societies" of the French research unit ART-Dev. He is currently working on family farming systems, to renew the analytical frameworks of their strategies and performance. As CIRAD’s focal point for the International Year of Family Farming, he recently published several books and articles on the topic and is invited to many international conferences on family farming all over the world.

An excellent book if you're just getting started with essential oils

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it! If you're just starting out with essential oils I recommend this book. This book talks about some of the most common essential oils and also some of the most complex essential oils. She also lists all the safety information for each essential oil as well which is a huge Plus!! She talks about the origin of each essential oil, the plant parts that are used, dilutions and what other essential oils might mix well with others essential oils. Everything about this book is exceptional!! There's also some history on essential oils.

Great Book!

I was actually surprised by two things:
1. The fact that I have a now vast and still growing library of books on Aromatherapy and Essential Oils (Including from authors like Worwood, Cooksley, Schnaubelt and Tisserand) yet I now find myself reaching for this one more than some of these other authors.
2. The negative reviews of others.

I guess my expectations were different. While it is an Encyclopeia which should make it a valuble reference source, I feel it does what an Encyclopeia should do and what is standard for that type of reference - that is it covers a lot of information on a broad range of items that you can look up (in this case essential oils) and does a good job giving you the necessary background and basic information that you would need to get a good understanding of what it is you looked up. (Not be a master at that topic because that would result in something far more extensive and a very weighty book when covering so many oils.) Despite being concise and to the point Lawless still manages to give you a snap shot of each oil with information on 13 topics for each of the over 165 oils listed (one review said over 190 but not sure where that number came from, I counted something around 168, still quite a list!).

The only thing I will say is that she is along the lines of Cooksley and Worwood where I sometimes feel like they are overly cautious. I believe in being responsible and informed with use but I prefer authors like Schnaubelt that don't discount an oil due to one study that was done once by someone and recorded and therefore it is now considered toxic, without looking at how the study was done and what factors were involved, if constituents of the oil were isolated, etc. However, if you are new to EOs than it is best to error on the more restricted use just to be safe.

I will not list the chapters in the introductory Part 1 as another reviewer already covered. But in Part 2 "The Oils", each oil is listed with its botanical name and then given the following information in the following order:

SYNONYMS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION (Of the plant)
DISTRIBUTION
OTHER SPECIES
HERBAL/FOLK TRADITION
ACTIONS
EXTRACTION
CHARACTERISTICS (Of the oils, scent, appearance, etc.)

This is what the majority of the book IS (just like an encyclopedia would be) and I believe it does a good job doing what it is designed to do. The fact that it is only missing about 3 of my favorite oils (probably because they are newer, i.e. Rhododendron, Palo Santo, etc.) and lists so many others, it truely is a nicely organized and very handy and useful reference.
It is easy to find the information you need and quickly. Despite the lack of "color" complaints by other reviewers, I still found it one of the more attractive aromatherapy books. It is well laid out, in nice print, and has some lovely black and white illustrations. The book is actualy more attractive than some of the other more well know ones and I think I reach for it more often now because I don't have to wade through many reciepes and a ton of other chapters to get to hunt for the part that just profiles the oils themselves. (Other information is good, all of the recepies, uses on animals, household cleaners, etc. just not what I am looking for when I am grabbing an encyclopedia to give the basic background and profile.)

ALSO - The Therapeutic Index in the back along with the General Glossary that defines the medical terms addressed in the book (and address in several others, but are not defined in a lot of other books) for those who do not have a health science background proves very useful. There is also a rather extensive Botanical Classification and a good Botantical Index in the very back.

So I will be getting the newer Illustraded version eventually but not out of dissapointment for this one, if anything because I was so impressed with the layout and information that exceeded my expectaions of this author that I took a chance on. (Getting a good used copy of this edition will allow those pinching pennies to add a great reference book to their Aromatherapy library.)

A Goldmine of Essential Oil Knowledge

This book is perfect for the Essential Oil dabbler and the professional alike! Julia Lawless explains the history of aromatherapy, the medicinal benefit behind it and, most importantly, she talks about the dangers/times to avoid an oil as well as it's benefits. She approaches her use of oils purely from a topical or inhalant standpoint (she doesn't endorse internal usage), but the knowledge she imparts is beneficial to anyone interested in Aromatherapy. She spends anywhere from a page to several pages dissecting each oil and their benefits, historical uses, cautions, and other oils that it goes well with for different purposes.

After doing a lot of research on different EO resource books on the market, I am quite pleased with my decision to purchase this one based on the depth of her coverage, the broad spectrum of information she includes, and her exhaustive technical research that went into making this EO Encyclopedia a necessity for every EO user!
