About the Author

Jane Austen was an English writer who penned six famous novels about love and class in the eighteenth century. Her works have been studied, performed and read for almost 200 years and still maintain a relevance and wisdom in today's society.

Still in fine form, old pro Erdman (Zero Coupon, 1993; the nonfiction Tug of War, 1996; etc.) produces another larky fiscal thriller in which the former head of the US Federal Reserve Board finds himself in trouble and on the run. Charles Black, the FRB's recently retired chairman, is jailed in Switzerland on charges of massive securities fraud. On the basis of seemingly irrefutable evidence, the Swiss authorities accuse him of using inside information to engineer a series of market killings that netted in excess of $400 million. But upright Charlie, it turns out, has been framed at the behest of an immensely wealthy Sardinian named Pietro di Cagliari. Using an attractive young woman as bait, the crafty islander has lured Herr Dr. Samuel Schweizer (the ostensibly incorruptible chairman of Switzerland's National Bank) into his high-flying orbit in aid of shady financial ends. In turn, an infatuated Sammy (who needs big bucks to keep his new mistress in the style to which she's accustomed) recruits Hans Zwiebach, a lawyer of easy virtue whose client list includes Charlie. Trading through the latter's dormant Swiss account on tips from Sammy, the duplicitous attorney amasses a considerable fortune that, although in Charlie's name, does nothing to enrich him. When a credible happenstance threatens an investigation, the three create a paper trail that leads to the hapless American. Concerned about loose ends, Pietro (with murder in mind) arranges for Charlie's escape from jail. Before the Sardinian's minions can do their dirty work, though, Charlie, with plucky wife Sally in tow, makes it to a remote Alaskan fishing village. Once in a comfortable lodge equipped with all the modern conveniences, the resourceful exWall Streeter not only fends off would-be assassins but also unravels the transnational plot against him. Paul Erdman's best to date

I love financial thrillers and have read most of Paul Erdman's fiction, but this is by far the best. Not only does he expertly take the reader through the world of derivatives investing and international banking, he paints a picture of Switzerland from Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse to the most remote parts of the Alps that makes you long to get on a plane and go there (and I have been there--it's worth it). The plot moves fast, from the point of view of every character; his knowledge of German, Swiss-German and Italian is impeccable, and the story culminates in an around-the-world chase that keeps you from putting the book down. I can't wait for his next one.

A page turner, difficult to put down.

I really wish Paul Erdman wrote more books. I have enjoyed everyone of his novels. No one of them is better than another, they are all good.
Erdman's novels are centered around investments economics and high finance adventure. To an economist they are especially exciting but I think for most readers they are each an excellent read and The Set-up is no exception. I highly recommend it.

"The Set Up" is pure Erdman!

I was a young GI in Germany in 1969 just learning to appreciate "the Trib." I remember one article that caught my eye: a young American banker working in Basel at the sub of a California bank was arrested for trying to corner the world cocoa market! He failed miserably, and in the process wiped out his employer's equity base. As if the young banker, named Paul Erdman, did not know enough about Switzerland already, he was to learn more, from many months inside a Swiss jail. I next noticed Erdman several years later. He had written a novel, "The Billion-Dollar Sure Thing." I read it and liked it, and later learned that he had begun his novelist's career in that Swiss jail. Erdman's subsequent novels have never disappointed. He is the master of the financial thriller, an unfortunately under-populated genre. "The Set Up," like all of Erdman's fiction, takes place largely in Switzerland. Charles Black, former Chairman of the U.S. Fed, is arrested at the Basel airport as he enters Switzerland. (Erdman reminds us, as he never fails to do, that Basel's airport straddles the Swiss/French border.) He finds himself in the maws of the Swiss power structure, comprised of a hundred or so rich and powerful Swiss men who are, in Erdman's eye, as amoral and as slimy as any in the world. No Swiss Heidi-types here. (Had Erdman been successful in cornering the cocoa market he would have been hailed, not jailed, by this group for furthering the cause of Swiss chocolate!) To divulge any more of the plot would be cheating. Suffice it to say, there is lots of (1)German- Swiss bashing,(2)Deus ex machina that stretches credibility, and (3)untranslated "Schwietzer dooch" and other languages. There is also a woman/mate of the male hero who is sharper than the hero himself. This theme is present in most Erdman novels. Erdman has produced eight novels in a quarter of a century, about one every three years. When I haven't seen one for a while, I start looking in book stores. This year I did something different: I searched for Erdman at amazon.com. Sure enough, he'd written a new book which I ordered immediately. The several days it took to arrive in the mail was an eternity as I anticipated reading a new Erdman. It arrived, and did not disappoint. Erdman remains at the top of his form!

Welcome to a day in the life of Sydney Detective Harry Belltree: a meth-addicted bikie shoots a woman during a police siege; an elderly couple commit suicide sitting outside their favourite caf�; and an unidentified white man is stabbed to death in the street. When the stabbing victim is identified as his brother-in-law Greg, his life becomes even more complicated. Especially after journalist Kelly Pool suggests that the three incidents may – somehow – be linked. Harry is still coming to terms with a car accident that killed his parents and blinded his wife, and while he can’t officially get involved in investigating Greg’s murder, that isn’t going to stop him. And when he finds that Greg and the elderly couple have links to a crooked moneylender, he’s determined to find out what really happened. Harry soon suspects that there may be a link to the death of his parents, which drives him (and Kelly Pool) into some dangerous and risky behaviour.

Crucifixion Creek is the first book of the Belltree trilogy, and Harry Belltree is a very different detective from both of Mr Maitland’s London based detectives, David Brock and Kathy Kolla. He’s impulsive, and not afraid of cutting corners to find out what he needs to know. Will the ends always justify the means?

There’s a lot of action in this novel, and plenty of tension, as Harry Belltree – with some help from Kelly Pool, his wife and others - sets out to find the truth behind the killers. There’s a fair amount of coincidence and good luck as well, but that didn’t affect my reading of the story, just my assessment of the probability of Harry Belltrees’s actions.

I’m not sure whether I’ll enjoy the Belltrees Trilogy as much as I enjoy the Brock and Kolla series, but I’m very keen to see where the next novel takes the characters.

Good police procedural story

A good solid police story, with lots of twists and turns, though some of them did stretch the imagination a bit.

The main character, Harry, is a bit of a vigilante and not everything that he did stayed on the right side of the law, though it was all for the better good. The sub-plots following Harry's wife and the newspaper correspondent were interesting and gave momentum to the story, and these, along with the final twist left it open for subsequent novels.

I had not previously read a story by Barry Maitland, but now look forward to reading another one.

Barry Maitland’s Complex Conspiracy Novel, “Crucifixion Creek,” is Centered on the Bloodiest Hellhole in Sydney, Australia!

Harry Belltree once died during combat while serving in Afghanistan; fortunately, he miraculously revived after eighteen minutes. Now he is a detective in Sydney, Australia. Three years ago, his parents were killed, and his wife blinded, in a car crash that what was ruled an accident. Harry believes it was cold-blooded murder. He also believes the car crash is connected to the bloody mayhem that is centered around a mysterious piece of real estate known as Crucifixion Creek. Evil, perverse politicians, lawyers, and land developers are conspiring to own that land and are using a notorious motorcycle gang to torture and murder anyone who gets in their way. That includes persistent detectives such as Harry Belltree.

Barry Maitland, who lives in New South Wales on the Pacific Coast of Australia, is the best-selling author of the superb Brock and Kolla mysteries. “Crucifixion Creek” is the debut of his new Harry Belltree trilogy. Fast-paced and bloody, it is the most intriguing conspiracy novel I’ve read in many years. “Crucifixion Creek” opens with a bloody murder (many more follow) and ends with another bloody murder, the most shocking of all. Gruesome, gut-wrenching discoveries and revelations abound. Harry finds himself up to his elbows in evil villains. Unfortunately, sometimes he can’t distinguish the good guys from the bad guys, because duplicity also abounds.

Despite her blindness, Harry’s beautiful wife, Jenny, is extremely congenial. Always remaining optimistic, she is learning to cope with her blindness. She is adept at using a high tech computer designed for the blind. Jenny uses her research skills to find clues for Harry who has been temporary suspended from the police force for not following protocol. Harry also relies on the research skills of Kelly Pool, a gutsy reporter for the “Bankstown Chronicle.” Another kind soul, she puts her career and life on the line in order to help Harry. Using disposable cell phones, they relay information to each other. Despite their clandestine relationship, Harry receives ridicule from his colleagues who suspect him of being a mole.

Crucifixion Creek is a neighborhood with a dark, bloody history. Today, thanks to an infamous motorcycle gang known as the Crows, it looks like a war zone. Any house that hasn’t been burned to the ground has been boarded up. The Crows abduct, torture, and murder per the orders of evil, perverse men. (Readers should be warned that there are some gruesome scenes, including a rape.) Most importantly, Crucifixion Creek holds an extremely disturbing secret that will churn your stomach. At least it did mine. Intended for mature readers, “Crucifixion Creek” is a spell-binding mystery that is part action, part horror, and part romance. Detective Sergeant Harry Belltree is a very likeable hero who really loves his wife, Jenny. (He doesn’t fool around with Kelly Pool.) I can’t wait for the next novel in the trilogy, “Ash Island,” slated to be published in America in 2016.

About the Author

David Warwick is a Consultant Hand Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has been a Consultant since October 1998 having trained in Hand Fellowships in Sydney and Oxford. He provides a Tertiary Referral service for Wessex, States of Jersey, Isle of Wight and British Army (Training and Recruitment) and looks after upper limb problems for Southampton Football Club and Hampshire County Cricket Club. He is Chairman of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand Education and Training Committee, and is a member of the Editorial Board of both the Journal of Hand Surgery (European) and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He is a member of the BSSH Instructional Course Committee and Research Committee and is an Examiner for the British Hand Diploma. He has co-written Apley's System of Orthopaedics, and has written several papers, chapters and lectures both in the UK and abroad on hand and wrist surgery topics. Roderick Dunn is a Consultant in Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Wessex Regional Plastic Surgery Unit at Odstock Hospital in Salisbury.He trained in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery and Microsurgery in Plymouth and Glasgow, with specialist fellowships in Hand and Microsurgery in India and Leeds. His special interest are Children's Hand Surgery, complex microsurgical upper limb reconstruction and peripheral nerve surgery. He has written several book chapters and papers, is a regular reviewer for JPRAS, JHS(Br and European) and JBJS.

Erman Melikyan is an Associate Specialist Hand Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. Following his training he worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the same time acting as a research associate at the department of Public Health and Epidemiology at Istanbul University until 1998. He obtained the European Diploma in Hand Surgery in 2000. He published the first randomised double-blinded study into extracorporeal shock wave treatment (ESWT) for tennis elbow worldwide. He studied Orthopaedic Engineering at the University of Cardiff and obtained the postgraduate diploma. Erman Melikyan is a member of the AO-UK faculty, the board of question writers at the Royal College of Surgeons and board of reviewers of JBJS. He is also a member of the BSSH. He has written chapters in hand surgery books and published several papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Jane Vadher is a Clinical Specialist and Hand Therapist at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. She is a qualified Occupational Therapist and has a Diploma in Hand Therapy. She has worked in Southampton since 1998 with previous experience in burns, plastics and orthopaedics in Cambridge, Sydney and Northwood, Middlesex. Jane is a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists and is currently a member of the education committee. In addition she runs accredited hand courses and is a guest lecturer at Southampton University.
