I thought the book was okay but not great. The concept was interesting, having the literal man of your dreams be a boy at your new school, but I felt like the plot/language was too simple. Not sure if I would read it again, but worth the read the first time around.

I tutor after school and in the summer time. Always looking for material that has reading, reading comprehension and language arts in all. My students don't mind reading the short stories and doing the activities that follow. The book also has a good variety of fiction and non-fiction.

I can't believe I'm the first one to review this book! This book is an EXCELLENT resource. Without a review, I simply crossed my fingers and purchased the book. I am so glad I did. The selections passed the Goldilocks test. They are not too short, but they are so lengthy that a six grader would would be intimidated during a tutoring session. The lexile levels range from 800-1100, and the selections cover a variety of genres. There is no need to create your own vocabulary or writing activities. The book covers it all. My only regret it the series seem to end at the sixth grade. This book is absolutely worth the money.

Varied selection of reading material that is definitely high interest but with the new Common Core standards I would suggest buying the 5th grade book for the 4th grade since the complexity of reading has so drastically increased. The 4th grade one for 4th grade students would be good for your just proficient or slightly below proficient readers. The beginning of the book has the Lexile scores for the selections so you can choose which is best for your group of students.

This would also be a great book for parents to work with their children to improve reading. Read it and then discuss using the questions at the end of the selections.

We use them for morning work in the 4th grade and vary which ones we use depending on the reading ability of the students.

Teachers can use the selection and then create Common Core type questions around the text. That is the one drawback to the book - the questions that are asked are basic and not those meaty inferential questions that most students struggle with in reading.

All in all a good resource and helpful when leaving sub plans.

I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter, who's been asking me for a fish care guide book. Recently, we set up two new aquariums in our home and my daughter wanted to learn more about keeping our fish healthy and happy. This book is great! It is geared towards an adult reader, but it's easy enough for my 7 year old to understand.

I was a little disappointed. It had pictures of very old aquariums. It was not user friendly. You had to really search for answer. Definitely not for beginners.

Good on You, Mate!

I read a lot of military books and this is one of the best. Capt. Ashcroft has managed to weld action, suspense, humor and political insight into one great tale of modern military conflict. The gruesomeness and tension of life and combat in Iraq is compellingly told. In addition, there are extremely humerous portions that will have you laughing to the point of tears. One caution however: if you're a "Hank the Yank" that hasn't spent time in Great Britain, Australia, or Canada, beware of the "C" word. To me, it just added to the authenticity of the story. What do you think guys are saying to each other in combat situations - Aw shucks?

I would rate this book on par with Mark Bowden's "Black Hawk Down" - one of the best I've read.

Good Book on Modern Combat

This is a well written book on modern combat in the middle east. In addition to telling a riveting story, Mr. Ashcroft provides some unique (though often clearly biased) perspectives on the actions of the Coalition Forces in Iraq. Overall, it is a fun and exciting read. I'm only giving it four stars for two reasons: 1) the author struggles to make clear his view of the U.S. military in Iraq. Some passages in the book shower praise on them, while others offer nothing but harsh criticism. He says "I now had the utmost respect for all of them," then turns around and accuses them of being overly anxious killers. 2) The book feels like it was written in a hurry. The writing is high quality and intelligent, but the story feels rushed. Its almost as if the publisher tried to repackage an honest and in depth telling of one man's powerful experiences into a fast-paced, shoot 'em up, action thriller. This may account for #1. Anyway, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in military history, current events, or just plain fun.

A hell of a read...

I'm US Military and have done two tours in iraq, having talked with private contractors over there and for a time wanted to do the same as them, but decided to stay in the military, though I still have a interest in doing that sort of work...

Capt. Ashford gives a very, very interesting and insightful look into the world of private contractors, giving a sometimes very humerous account of his time in iraq to a sometimes very bleak look of things as they were when he was there.

From Capt. Ashford and his fellow englishman's hilarious banter and rivalry between themselves and their south arfican team-members, who's constant "ja ja..." always manages to bring a chuckle in true afrikaner style, to his own insights into going crazy at a office job and wanting to get back to what he did best and get into the action, to having to deal with their sometimes idiotic and highstrung clients and iraqi co-workers, this book is at times hilarious, at times dark and dismal, and at other times filled with action for any war junkie to enjoy.

People tend to look at people like Capt. Ashford as the dirty, evil mercenary who is willing to do anything for a buck, when infact most are family men with loving children, simply trying to support themselves and their families using the skills they learned in their military career's and putting them to applicable use.

People go to college or technical schools to learn the knowledge and gain the skills they need to get paying jobs in the real world, same as these men but they get the stereotype of blood-thirsty mercenaries.....strange how no one ever chastises the scientist or doctor who is suppose to help people with the skills they have and then goes off and bio-engineers diseases and chemical weapons, nuclear weapons, and weapons that can kill more in two minutes than these men could ever kill in a lifetime.....

My bantering asside, I highly reccommned this book to any and all interested in this aspect of the world we live in, the life of a private military contractor.

Not worth the time or money

This book claims to offer a course on lean six sigma. It really does not cover the subject properly and is totally inadequate in the presentation. I was taking a LSS black belt course when I purchased the 36-hour guide thinking it would help a bit with understanding the subject and prep for the test. It did not.

Great content, but sorely in need of a thorough review by a good Technical Editor

I've been working with C/C++ for a few years now, and with Qt for 1-2 years...mainly with Qt4 in embedded systems. I have a couple of the (very thorough) Qt4-based books that are available here on Amazon, and they are very good. In fact, they are almost TOO good from the standpoint that they nearly overwhelm you with information. But as reference material, they are extremely valuable. That being said however, when I saw that this book was dealing with Qt5 I wanted to go ahead and read it.

I read both of the reviews posted previous to mine, before buying the book. Then I purchased the Kindle version of this book and worked through the first couple of chapters. I can definitely see the criticism(s) noted in Keith Peter's review. It's pretty apparent that this book did not have a good Technical Editor to go through it, because there are a number of simple errors that should NOT have made it through. For example in chapter 2, here's one such example:

"...In other cases, we have to explicitly set the parent for a QObject child so that the parent can take over its ownership and manage the release of its memory. Hence, we pass the QObject parent, which is this, a MainWindow class to the constructor of QTimer."

It's unfortunate that the author doesn't point out that the "this" pointer is a pointer to the instance of a class that is currently being referenced. In other words, "this" isn't a class...it's a pointer to an instance of a class.

There are a number of similar such errors in the first two chapters, but overall the intent of the author is very good I think. But as I stated above, the book is in dire need of a good Technical Editor to go through and point this out to the author. I have served as a Technical Editor for a book on embedded systems, and it's not an easy task. It take many hours of work to go through a book such as this, but the result is well worth the effort.

So overall I'll want to come back and revisit this review after finishing the book, but for now I would have to give it a 4-stars due to poor editing. I would have to agree with Keith on this point. I would also add that you really do need to have some C++ experience before working through this book, as that is assumed--and it would also be most helpful to know something about Qt (and Qt Creator) before reading this book. While it's not absolutely imperative that you have used Qt before, there are many times that the author chooses not to go into elaborate detail on a take he asks you to perform. If you are at least somewhat experienced with Qt Creator you will have little problem getting things accomplished--but you might struggle a little but if you've never used the IDE before. On the other hand it will make you dig more for the answer(s), so I suppose that's not all bad.

This book is useful and I'm enjoying going through it and learning from it. My only criticism is the poor English used in the writing. This book was obviously not written by a native speaker. I'm not picking on the author. But I'm shocked that any editor would let so much through without any correction. There are points in the book where I just sit back and say, "What is he talking about???" Not because it's a difficult technical point, but because I can't parse the words in the sentence. But again, the overall content of the book is great. With better editing, it would be 5+ stars.
