About the Author
Bill Coleman, LMSW, TEP is a Certified Psychodrama Trainer and Licensed Master Social Worker in Arizona. He has led psychodrama groups at Sierra Tucson for Chemical Dependency, Mood Disorders, Trauma, Sex Addiction, Eating Disorders and Pain Management. He is also affiliated with Desert Star Addiction Treatment Center, a new Intensive Outpatient Program in Tucson. Bill has also added neurofeedback to his therapeutic skills and has created a separate practice known as The Middle Way. He is originally from New York where he worked at Four Winds Psychiatric Hospital directing Psychodrama groups for dually diagnosed inpatient and outpatient adolescents. He was an Adjunct Professor of Theater Therapy at Russell Sage College. He is on the faculty of the Hudson Valley Psychodrama Institute where he periodically teaches psychodrama for clinicians (see www.hvpi.net). Bill is also associated with the Action Institute of California (see: www.theactioninstitute.com). He has presented at many national conferences on Trauma, Addiction and Psychodrama.

A Must Read for Trauma Therapists

I worked with Bill back in 2008. His methods outlined in this book and applied in practice has profound results for his patients. For therapists, this is a must read if you are working with abuse survivors. For patients interested in the science and practice behind learning your own driving behaviors, this can be a challenging topic and well worth the work.

Wonderful Trauma/Addiction Recovery Exercises

This is a must-have book for any counselor or therapist (not to mention anyone in recovery) to help identify the character defenses that are still getting in the way of having a good life, as well as a great opportunity to build self-compassion when exploring the origins of those defenses. Coleman's vast clinical experience, as well as his deep understanding of the effects that trauma has, shine through in this terrific book.

Beyond Pathology

I have a veritable library of books on the Enneagram. I have many books by Don Richard Riso and Helen Palmer. If you wish to have an overview of the Enneagram types and their attributes, or if you want to try typing your friends, family and work mates so that you can understand how to get along with them, their books are really good. But there is one glaring difficulty when it comes to typing yourself: their books seem to focus mainly on what is wrong or unhealthy in each type. I am at what Don Richard Riso calls "Level 1" of my type, basically the healthiest edge of the spectrum, and I could not figure out what type I was until I read this book. Instead of just going for the negative fixations, What's My Type? describes nuances, such as how the different types focus their energy into activities, things that frustrate or upset them and other relatively neutral traits. Attributes are stated in terms that you can identify with without seeming unhealthy or defective. And when it comes to the types outside of your own, each is written about in a descriptive way that helps you understand what it's like to look at the world through their lenses, both facilitating compassion and broadening your own perspective to include each type's unique value system. It does a beautiful job of exploring what can really take each personality to its highest spiritual level, rather than merely attaining psychological health. I highly recommend going on to read "My Best Self" by the same authors after you read this. It builds brilliantly and insightfully on the foundation laid by this book.

Nine Personalities Categorized by Their Basic Flaw

Kathleen V. Hurley & Theodore E. Dobson's book, "What's My Type?" offers the clearest method for understanding which of the nine of the Enneagram's personality types you actually have.

Each of the nine points on the Enneagram correspond to a numbered personality type.

Each of these nine personality types is characterized by its own unique major personality flaw. These personality types are:

1.) anger
2.) pride
3.) deceit
4.) jealousy
5.) greed
6.) fear
7.) gluttony
8.) lust
9.) sloth

Whether we care to admit it or not, we know ourselves very well. It's very hard to deny the obvious in our failings.

But don't despair that this way of viewing personality is too "negative"! It's actually a great first step toward getting to know yourself better. The clarity of Kathleen V. Hurley's & Theodore E. Dobson's method gives you a very solid, very practical understanding what you need to do to improve yourself.

Essentially, the underlying differences in the characteristics of the nine enneagram personality types are a matter of how the personality types use instinct, emotion, and thought to arrive at the sort of decisions that are typical for each of the nine personality types. ("Instinct" is knowing without knowing how you know. The authors provide this very useful description of instinct in their book.)

Of their two books on the enneagram I've read, "What's My Type?" (the first book) is better than "My Best Self." But both are useful.

For example, the second book provides a description of the 3rd personality type (whose major character flaw is deceit) that seeks to offer improvements upon the one of the first book. But at the same time their second book adds unnecessary theoretical complexity to the authors' evolving overview of what causes each personality type to have a different set of characteristics.

The 3rd personality type can be highly, intensely emotional but may forfeit emotion, including love, in pursuit of "success." In their second book, though, the authors argue that the 3rd personality type feels all emotions strongly except love (in my reading of their book). They complicate the enneagram chart by describing the 3rd personality as being sub-dividable into two groups: one sub-group that leans toward the intellect as a secondary mental faculty & the other that leans toward intuition. Their first book, "What's My Type?," avoids such theoretical entanglements.

Wonderful Book for Learning the Enneagram

This was the first Enneagram book I read. It was the most excellant in terms of describing the way the system works. The authors use layman words and spiritual references in ways that make you truly come to understand the sometimes wonderful and sometimes lacking personalities that make us who we are.

About the Author

Lewis A. Coser (1913-2003) began his career teaching at the University of Chicago followed by the University of California. Upon leaving California he went to teach for fifteen years at Brandeis University, where he founded the sociology department, before finally settling in at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He was the first sociologist to bring together the ideas of conflict theory and structural functionalism. He is a past American Sociologist Association president and author of many works, including Conflict and Consensus, Masters of Sociological Thought, and The Functions of Social Conflict.

You say "conflict" like it's a bad thing . . .

This stimulating work explores the paradoxical thesis that conflict is not socially destructive in most cases, but rather an essential mechanism in the positive evolution of society. I am not well versed in the literature of sociology, but it appears to me that since its appearance in 1956, this little book has achieved deservedly the status of a classic.

Over the course of eight chapters the author discusses sixteen propositions regarding the nature of social conflict. Each proposition is stated initially as a quotation from the work "Conflict" of German sociologist Georg Simmel ("Der Streit," 1908). The author then comments on the initial statement, drawing on his obviously vast learning in the fields of sociology, psychology, politics, and history. Each of the sixteen commentaries concludes with a restatement of the original proposition incorporating modifications deemed appropriate from the survey of more recent works.

This structure makes the book as useful as a reference as it is interesting to read straight through. The reader who wants only to refresh the memory or who is interested in only part of the work can easily locate the relevant numbered proposition.

I can think of no better way to convey a sense of this work than to rephrase below in my own words some of the key propositions:

Proposition 2: The ability to engage in conflict with disagreeable individuals allows us to remain in a social relationship with them. Conflict prevents them from growing even more abusive while also giving us some emotional satisfaction. Without conflict, we would be forced to withdraw altogether from social contact with such people.

Proposition 7: Open societies derive strength from the large number of antagonistic groups that they include. Cross-membership in a number of these groups keeps individuals from orienting themselves on one side or the other of a single dividing issue threatening social cohesion. The varied antagonisms and conflicts cancel each other out.

Proposition 8: Relationships characterized by open and frequent conflict are often the most stable. Conflict tends to be suppressed by parties who fear that their relationship is too unstable to survive the tumult.

Proposition 13: Conflict tends to bind the antagonists into acceptance of a common social order. Conventions regarding the rules of warfare are one outstanding example. Virtually all law is the result of social conflict.

Proposition 14: Despite the disadvantages of disunity in conflict, the parties to any given conflict will tend to prefer unity in the ranks of their adversaries. Only a unified adversary can be counted upon to adhere to the rules of engagement and to the terms of the agreement that concludes the conflict.

My own interest in reading "The Functions of Social Conflict" arose from a desire to pursue the intriguing similarity between its thesis and the arguments of certain writers on the process of group decision-making. They claim that getting a group together to understand the differences among them can build a strong social bond. The process to reach understanding can be ugly when there are strongly conflicting interests, but the social bond that results can be a powerful force keeping the group together through the difficulties of developing a joint solution to their problem. I can't prove it, but I'd bet that these writers have read Lewis Coser.

An index and extensive footnotes add usefulness to the inherent interest of this fine book.

About the Author

Larry Harris holds the Fred V. Keenan Chair in Finance at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. In July 2002, Professor Harris was appointed Chief Economist of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he served until June 2004.

Great content, great writing!

I have been trading for 8 years. 6 years prop trading, I now run a hedge fund. We make about 10,000 trades/day. I wish I had read this book years ago. I've had to pay Mr. Market a large sum to learn many of these lessons. Larry Harris has written what I consider to be the best book in the field of trading. He covers nearly all topics, from structural & regulatory issues, to descriptions of the players; costs to performance evaluation. Presentation is excellent - the numerous sidebars, tables & graphs serve to illustrate the text. My only complaint is that the book does not take the quantitative side far enough. I recommend a technical appendix plus specific references (perhaps annotating the excellent bibliography) for the mathematically inclined reader.
If you are interested in trading, or curious about the markets, buy and read this book!

The best reference book on trading and exchanges

This book's title understates its contents and scope: this is a comprehensive guide to how financial instrument trading works. If you ever wondered what happens when you place an order to sell 10 million shares of GOOG (which you may or may not already own), or what transpires when you try to corner the silver market like the Hunt brothers, you'll find all the details in this book. But it's more than that.

For the most part accurate and easy-to-read, the 600-page book also covers issues that are of most importance to traders: where to trade, when to trade, how to trade, and what price to trade at. Very detailed discussions reveal how the various market participants, from exchanges to broker-dealers to moronic traders, fulfill their respective roles in the Great Paper Wealth Game. Entire chapters are devoted to speculators vs. liquidity suppliers. The discussions on how each type of players trade and try to outsmart one another offer terrific insights into the psychology and techniques of market players. Usually tedious topics such as order-matching rules and volatility measures are also covered well here.

This is not a book about how to read stock charts or build sophisticated multi-variate GARCH models to predict volatility. It's also not about how you could become a better gambler - the author says the gambler always loses, so you don't have much hope there.

This practioner's book is about financial markets and its inner workings and the human beings that drive them. If you want one authoritative reference volume on the mechanics of financial markets, this is it.

My only quibble is it's expensive for someone who has to pay for the book out of their own pocket.

Encyclopedic, Yet Readable and Accessible

If you don't understand how the markets work, want to learn more, and are willing to invest an immodest amount of time and money, this is a book you must read.
Larry Harris is a brilliant contributor to the understanding of markets, and is currently Chief Economist of the Securities and Exchange Commission. This book however, is written as a textbook for the introductory markets class he taught at USC for many years.
Larry's book pulls back the curtains on the mystery and mumbo-jumbo of what happens when investors buy and sell securities. The book is lightly written, with many anecdotes and amusing sidebars, yet presents the latest and best knowledge on how (and why) markets work.

I have been using this series to homeschool my daughter. The stories are funny . At the end of each 1 page story there are questions covering main idea, details, vocabulary, and inference. This product is usually difficult to find . Book C3 has 50 stories.
