Why would the author do this? Because, first of all, to give an objective assessment of all, or nearly all, the previously existing commentaries, written by other annotators. But chiefly because many of these side variations are interesting and educational in and of themselves, and create supplementary exercises. Look at them simply as lyrical digressions; don't worry if they seem unconnected to the main theme.
Where possible, the author has tried to lay out the principles, methods and rules, ideas and techniques that lie behind the moves.The book was also designed as a practice book, to test and underscore the reader's newly acquired knolwedge.
This book takes it place next to the author's classic "Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual" as being one of the great books of the modern era, a book from which the serious student may take his or her knowledge and understanding of complex middlegame ideas to the next level.

Good analysis but...

This book features very good analysis, it searches for the "truth" in chess, and provides very specific tips, in the art of chess analysis. There are stories and anecdotes that are very enjoyable read.
I agree with an earlier review where it has a very small audience, but I believe that this book can be "read". The material presented is complex for even a master level player, but it is plausible for an club player to sit down to just read and enjoy the prose, and selectively choose what part of the analysis to follow.
Depending on the goals of the reader, the book can either enjoyable as a casual read, or a possible letdown for a player seeking to improve. For players looking to improve their analytical technique (which is the main proposition of the book), most amateur players will not be able to make tangible strides from this book. I feel that the players who would gain most from this "practical training" would be players that already have the calculation, and endgame technique of a very accomplished player (2400+). Outside of this elite, most players would be able to benefit much more easily from Dvoretsky's other works as they are much more accessible.
So to sum it up, Enjoyable to read, but it is hard to understand how it is a basis of "practical training for the ambitious player". Perhaps "training for the ambitious master" is more fitting description. If you are curious whether or not you measure up to his definition of "ambitious player", buy it and see if you meet Dvoretsky's expectations!

Avoid the Kindle version

All the good things written about the book stand true, and I will not be the first to disagree. I will strongly suggest that potential buyers avoid the dreadful Kindle version. Not only is it incredibly expensive, but it is also an absolute disaster in formatting.
The text is an absolute mess in the presentation, with alternating sizes in the fonts, as well as very poor presentation of the chess notation, which adds spaces here and there where there should be none.
The worst part is that in spite of an announcement that the diagrams were resized for tablet viewing, this turns out to be utter fiction, and not only are the diagrams all of different sizes (a first), but most are incredibly small, viewed on a modest 7-inch tablet. So far the best Kindle versions of chess books I have seen are by Everyman.

this is a highclass book for not the class players

This is a book for A-class ,experts,and masters chess players not for the hobby player because it asks you to think like a complete player having knowledge of opening,middel,and the end game of chess. you must want to possess all the qualities of a grandmaster possesses in analysis,theory,and practical applications. O yes chess can be played and enjoyed at almost every level of ability ,but if you are seeking the highest level of ability you need to read it study it and master its content,so Dvoretsky puts the reader in deep analyses that way he/she must learn and change their chess behavior over the board.
