Afro-Latin America, 1800-2000, by George Reid Andrews

While the rise and abolition of slavery and ongoing race relations are central themes of the history of the United States, the African diaspora actually had a far greater impact on Latin and Central America. More than ten times as many Africans came to Spanish and Portuguese America as the United States.

In this, the first history of the African diaspora in Latin America from emancipation to the present, George Reid Andrews deftly synthesizes the history of people of African descent in every Latin American country from Mexico and the Caribbean to Argentina. He examines how African peooples and their descendants made their way from slavery to freedom and how they helped shape and responded to political, economic, and cultural changes in their societies. Individually and collectively they pursued the goals of freedom, equality, and citizenship through military service, political parties, civic organizations, labor unions, religious activity, and other avenues.

Spanning two centuries, this tour de force should be read by anyone interested in Latin American history, the history of slavery, and the African diaspora, as well as the future of Latin America.

Review

"Do not be fooled by its essential readability; this book belongs on the same shelf as the venerable Cambridge general histories....Essential. All college collections."--J. Rosenthal, SUNY College at Oneonta

"Andrews' Afro-Latin American is a compelling historical narrative.... Such a work is long overdue."--Dwame Dixon, Latin American Research Review

"The title and the text of the book may be brief, but Reid Andrews' latest work is an impressively thorough survey of the experiences of Afro-Latin Americans from the independence era to the present. In 200 pages he places the experiences of the "black" and "brown" descendents of the area's slaves in the major political and economic developments of the time, and traces how they have both affected and been affected by those developments. Coherently presented and clearly written, this will probably remain the definitive overview of the history of modern Afro-Latin America for years to come." --The Americas

"Afro-Latin America is a deftly balanced and impressively nuanced study that is remarkable for its geographical span, covering the area (except for the non-Hispanic Caribbean) from Mexico to Argentina. This highly accessible, magisterially authoritative account fills a long-standing void in the bibliography for Latin American Studies, American Cultures and the history of the Americas in general. Insightful, intellectually provocative, and engagingly written, this book should find a wide audience among both specialists and non-specialists."--Franklin W. Knight, Johns Hopkins University

"George Reid Andrews's tour de force draws on a breath-taking range of scholarship published in and on Latin America to make a powerful argument about the contributions of blacks and mulattos to national and regional histories."--American Historical Review

"George Reid Andrews has drawn a rich array of scholarship into a splendid historical synthesis, upon which he builds his own innovative interpretation. Conveying the texture of lived experience for people of African descent in Latin America, while exploring the dynamics of historical change, this book is a superb accomplishment."--Rebecca J. Scott, University of Michigan

"Andrews has managed to rescue from what had traditionally been the shadows of Latin American historiography the modern history of Afro-Latins. By doing so he has started us on the needed road to a more comprehenseive discussion of race and nation in the American hemisphere."--American Quarterly

A Book On A Topic Long Overdue
By John Roberto
From the first page of the Introduction George Reid Andrews sets the tone of his latest work, Afro-Latin America: 1800 - 2000. The book looks at the Latin-American world focusing on the mostly overlooked fact that the African population south of Central and South America far exceeded in numbers its North American counterparts. "During the period of slavery," Andrews writes, "ten times as many Africans came to Spanish and Portuguese America (5.7 million) as to the United States (560,000). By the end of the 1900s, Afro-Latin Americans outnumbered Afro-North Americans by three to one...[making it] obvious that we need histories of Latin America's Diaspora comparable to those of the United State's African Diaspora. This book is an effort to provide such a history." Andrews then continues to expound on the problem of "how...do we know who in Latin America is of African ancestry and who is not?" Explaining the problems previous historians and social scientists have had with relative terms such as "black," or "brown." For the purposes of his book, Andrews simply states that for his study, "any individual described...as black...or brown, or mulatto will be considered...to be of known African ancestry."

The book is divided into six chapters, beginning with a section of Maps before the Introduction and ending with Population Counts, a Glossary, End Notes and a detailed Bibliography. Each chapter covers a specific topic and time period, and is presented is a straightforward narrative format. The first chapter presents an overview of Afro-Latin America in 1800. In describing the diversity of the population Andrews points out that one could find in the region, "slaves working at the lowest level of the urban economy, slaves and free blacks working as independent street vendors, free black men entrusted with arms and wearing the king's uniform, and a free black man officiating as a Catholic priest." He also goes on to describe how these displaced people kept their culture alive. "Slaves' acceptance of Christianity," Andrews states, "did not necessary imply their abandonment of African religion...as slaves added Christian saints and deities to African pantheons and even invested them with attributes of African gods."

The second chapter describes The War for Freedom, 1810 - 1890, and concentrates on the effect the liberal revolutions of the late 1700, early 1800s had on the region. "The Atlantic revolutions affected Latin America not just by the force of their example but by their geopolitical impact as well. Just as the American Revolution indirectly triggered its French counterpart, so did the French Revolution indirectly trigger the independence struggles in Latin America." Andrews focuses on the impact of the Haitian Revolution, and while not considered by the author as part of Latin-America (being a French colony), the rippling effect it caused impacted the fight for liberty throughout the region. The "bitter civil wars [that] would rage on in much of the region...as in Haiti...would provide Spanish American slaves with opportunities to escape slavery and to fight for their emancipation." Andrews then describes the conflicts brought about by the colonial powers against their mother countries in the fight for freedom, and how slaves used these fights to gain their own liberty. Beginning with the Hidalgo rebellion in Mexico in 1810, and continuing through the fighting between rebels and royalists in Venezuela, to multiparty wars in Uruguay, Andrews explores the opportunities these "revolutions" gave slaves to cast off their oppressive lives and declare war on their former owners. One example of this is provided in the description of the rebel uprising in Chile of the 1820s. Joining the bands of guerrillas that had sprouted throughout out the countryside Andrews describes how, "fearing for their lives, hacendados and plantation owners...fled their estates. In their absence, those slaves who remained behind converted their living quarters into liberated territory, in which slaves began to exercise a certain measure of self-determination over their lives."

In chapter three, The Politics of Freedom, 1810 - 1890, Andrews describes the struggles by former slaves to end the Caste system. In claiming citizenship, and building a Middle Class, Andrews also describes how these new found "citizens," found themselves taking part in sometimes bloody uprising as, "liberal parties" in their attempts to out maneuver their conservative counterparts, "drew support...[from] middle- and lower-class nonwhites, who had suffered social and political exclusion on the basis of...their class [and racial] status." The fourth and fifth chapters, Whitening, 1880 - 1930, and Browning and Blackening, 1930 - 2000, explore the regions struggle to cope with its mixed racial heritage. "In all the countries of the region, writers, politicians and state planners wrestled with the problem of Latin America's racial inheritance." For the peoples in nations such as Venezuela, Cuba and Brazil, the answer to their "blackness" was simple (and based on 300 years of pro-slavery rhetoric); encourage an infusion of "white" settlers into the regions to "Europeanize Latin American societies."

To achieve this Andrews points out, it was not only necessary to encourage white settlement of the region, but also transform the physical nature of the region itself. In that respect downtown areas of major cities were to be torn down, only to be rebuilt based on their European counterparts. It was hoped that this "modernizing" of the cities, complete with sewage and water systems, electrical power, trolley lines, subways and multi-storied buildings, would encourage "the present blacks...to constitute themselves as civilized peoples." However these efforts met with failure, and as Andrews points out in the latter chapter, the end of the export boom after the 1930s became of time of nation building and economic moderation. "Instead of denying and seeking to obliterate the region's history of racial mixing," Andrew writes, the new national identities, "embraced it as the essence of being Latin American (cultural browning)."

In the final chapter, 2000 and Beyond, Andrews asks the question "what new challenges are likely to confront Afro-Latin Americans?" The answers are not simple ones, and depend, according to the author, on social/economic, as well as democratic concerns. How it affects the people of Afro-Latin America mostly depends on what segment of the black population one is talking about. As Andrew himself puts it, "the consequences of growth will be very harsh...for the black peasants," who to this very day, still "face the loss of their land to large, highly capitalized...enterprises."

Andrews ends his work with a comprehensive Appendix listing the "Population Counts" from 1800 until 2000. Used in conjunction with the three maps at the front of the book, the Appendix helps illustrate the growth and assimilation of the African population. In support of his narrative, Andrews provides hundreds of endnotes, broken down to correspond with the book's introduction and six chapters as well as a comprehensive bibliography, listing all of Andrew's sources. In addition the 15 illustrations serve to help the reader visualize "Afro-Latin Americans" as real people.

Overall Andrews accomplishes exactly what he sets out to do. In tackling this subject, Andrews provides the first history of the African Diaspora in Latin America from emancipation to the present. By bringing into the light the struggles of "blacks" within Latin America, Andrews fills a void that dearly needed to be filled. By covering Spanish America, Brazil, and the Caribbean, Andrews brings to the public how African-descended people fought their way out of slavery and how once free, they helped shape, and responded to the political, economic, and cultural changes that built the democracies of their societies.

As the economies of both North and South America are brought ever closer by Globalization, the history of America's closets neighbors, and the largest "African" population in the Western Hemisphere, needed to be told. Franklin W. Knight of Johns Hopkins University can best sum up the importance of this work, "This highly accessible, magisterially authoritative account fills a long-standing void in the bibliography for Latin American Studies, American Cultures and the history of the Americas in general. Insightful, intellectually provocative, and engagingly written, this book should find a wide audience among both specialists and non-specialists."

Great Book!
By George Echeverri
I recommend this book to everyone interested in studies of social sciences, global history, anthropology, the study of "race", and the trans-Atlantic slave trade/African-diaspora outside the USA. Most the time the study of slavery is emphasized only on the USA when in actuality other countries had slavery longer and "imported" more Africans like Brasil. This book can help you draw commonalities and differences in the experiences of slavery, Africans and their descendants had in the Americas. This book presents knowledge that otherwise has been kept esoteric and unapplied to society. In USA schools students are only taught about slavery in the U.S. and U.S. history in a very Eurocentric form, but this book should be read by these students so they can learn the truth about how the countries of the western hemisphere were born and the large part Africans and their descendants had to do with it. This book introduces you to Black history of other countries: Black Brazilian history, Black Colombian history, Black Cuban history, Black Venezuelan History, Black Dominican history, Black Puerto Rican history, etc.

The best Anthropological book I have read concerning the region
By Amazon Customer
One of the best sources of information on the anthropology in the region, Afro-Latin America 1800-2000 is a well written and detailed account of the experience, and influence, the African people have had in the former Spanish and Portuguese colonies. While Americans can often explain the course of African-American History in the United States, the experience of Africans in Latin America is often a mystery if not all together unheard of. An irony considering that this region now has the highest population of Africans outside of Africa itself.

The strengths of the book are found in chapters 1, which covers the early days of slavery, and chapters 4 and 5 where Andrews explains how the African population experienced both a "whitening" and a "blackening" in terms of trying to understand and create an identity that was both acceptable to themselves and to the greater Caucasian and mixed population around them. The problem of course was where the lines could be drawn considering that unlike with the American experience where a dividing line could be easily found, the Afro-Latin slave existence was one of complexity in that slaves and free men and women could be see at various different class and political levels in the region. The mixtures of Europeans, Native Americans, and Africans, giving birth to creation of a multiracial people, only made the issue more difficult. Blacks would find that they were discriminated against by those of mixed blood who themseleves would also be discriminated against by those who were more European in their heritage. If anything, the question of whether or not "race" is a social or biological concept becomes more difficult to answer for those who support the latter in that the region has seen the greatest racial mixture in recent centuries.

The cultural impact of the Africans was also felt culturally in aspects such as religion, music, and dance. Andrews goes into some depth explaining how the African culture was at first seen as "barbaric" by those of European descent and then, during the 20th century, became a form of popular nationalist expression. Capoeira, Candomble, and Carnaval are only three of the major cultural expressions that have roots in African tradition and belief. Africa is indeed very much alive in these modern forms of culture and the irony is again that European descendents have also adopted these as a form of identity. The core strengths of the book is focused on these subjects and it is unfortunate that more time was not given in covering them further in depth. Andrews could have spent an entire chapter alone on these subjects but instead left them to separate parts in separate chapters which was unfortunate considering that he at times focuses more on political and economic development.

The African-Latin American experience is one that is more complex then that in the states and will be the source of continuing problems, and solutions, for the region. Afro-Latin America 1800-2000 is both a good introduction and continuing eduction for those who have an interest in the anthropology of the region.

From Publishers Weekly
Among the 24 stories and 25 poems in this fictional overview of a popular sport are surprises from such illustrious names as Evelyn Waugh, Joyce Carol Oates and Walt Whitman-though the more turgid, macho prose of such genre giants as Alan Sillitoe and John L. Parker sets the book's overall emotional tone. The better stories break away from the repetitious variations on the theme of competition: Sara Maitland's "The Loveliness of the Long-Distance Runner," for instance, explores the oppositional thoughts of a woman runner about to enter a marathon and her female, non-athletic lover, who is both attracted and repelled by the nature of her partner's hobby. Oates's "Running" is an unusual, stream-of-consciousness narrative about a nameless woman who, while running in the woods with her lover, perceives a physical threat from a group of men. On the darker side, the title character in James Tabor's "The Runner" is attacked by rednecks in a remote area and decides to fight back, with startling results. This collection should prove indispensable for hard-core road warriors and of significant interest to sports fiction fans in general-and may even contain enough surprises to gratify readers in the mainstream.

From Booklist
Recreational runners have no trouble finding articles and books on how to increase their speed, carbo-load before a marathon, or handle interval training. But try to find a nice short story or poem about running. To answer this running void, so to speak, in sports literature, editor Battista presents more than 20 fictional stories and novel excerpts (of course, there's an extract from Alan Sillitoe's Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner) about running as well as 24 verse selections on the subject. The writers range from the nearly unknown to the well-known and include such moderns as Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Cade Bambara and such classicists as Homer, represented by a selection from The Iliad, and A. E. Housman, with his elegiac "To an Athlete Dying Young." Whether runners will sit still long enough to muse over Rudyard Kipling's or Walt Whitman's verse remains to be seen, but to requests for running stories, this book provides suitable if not always riveting responses. Encompasses all the emotions of running: excellent
By A Customer
This book should be in the hands of every runner. The short stories are amazing. The different portrayals of running can appeal to anyone, from beginner to advanced. Some of the stories will bring you to your race days and get your adrenaline running as if you are runninf the race. I can only read them one at a time because I get to pumped up and have to relax.
The poems are very eclectic. They capture the crazy thoughts that go through your mind while you are running. They also are beautiful descriptions of a very basic act. I loved them all. Every once in a while I read one before i go run. They make you think, and isn't that what happens on a run. These poems give you good mind fuel.

Great collection of stories and poems about running
By Chad
I posted this review originally at fourtrails.com.

What it is: A collection of short stories and poems about running, featuring works by authors you've heard of (Joyce Carol Oates) and some you probably haven't (Eddy Orcutt).

What it isn't: A uniform collection of descriptions of lungs bursting, chests heaving, legs flying, and so on. Though there are plenty of those descriptions as well.

Why I read it: I once wanted to get a degree even less lucrative than a PhD in Philosophy-an MFA in Creative Writing. These stories let me imagine life as a real athlete and a real writer.

Description: If the syllabi of a PE teacher and an English teacher had a love-child, the first text on this love-child syllabus would be this book. It contains examples of truly spectacular writing from canonical writers such as Joyce Carol Oates, W. H. Auden, and Walt Whitman, as well as many stories and poems that have been mostly forgotten. There are stories about athletes and coaches, predators and prey, heroes and villains.

There are several stories that would justify the price of the book all on their own. Harry Sylvester's "Going to Run All Night" is a story about a young soldier who must run an impossible distance in order to bring a message to a support unit. It's a twentieth-century version of the story of Pheidippides, but much more visceral. George Ewart Evans' "The Medal," a story of a young white man trying to return an ill-won medal to an older black man, is an examination of white privilege in the 1950s.

James Tabor's "The Runner" haunts me in ways reminiscent of some of the short stories of James Tate, and might be the best story in the lot. Another contender for the best short story is Joyce Carol Oates's "Running." The entire story consists of four sentences-three short and one long. It's masterful. I can hardly pass a woman on a trail now without wondering whether she has the same fears as the main character in Oates's story.

Oates's story isn't the only one to sit outside the archetype of macho dramatizations of competition and conquering (though I happen to enjoy those macho dramatizations). Sara Maitland's "The Loveliness of the Long-Distance Runner" is a story about a lesbian non-runner and her running partner. Toni Cade Bambara's "Raymond's Run" is the story of a young female sprinter and her younger brother, Raymond.

The collection of poems is also very enjoyable. Ron Rash's "Running the Mile Relay" painfully captures the reality of young men facing the military draft, moving from the "easy courage" of facing pain on the track toward the concluding verse:

Tight as the baton,

we gripped our certain knowledge:

this running in circles meant

more than anything coming.

The blurb on the back cover by Runner's Gazette is accurate: "This book is a must for any runner who thinks and experiences." If you like your running-related-reading to go advice on training and nutrition, this book is for you.

A Decent Conclusion To A Fun Series
By S William Miku
Senran Kagura started as a niche 3DS game that exploded instantly in popularity, due in part to its focus on sexuality. (If you abhor sexuality, innuendo, and suggestive humour, this franchise isn't for you.) Since its debut in 2011, Senran Kagura has had sequels on two other platforms, and has been adapted into anime as well as manga. The game, the anime, and the manga tell roughly the same stories, but the ending is arguably the point which they split apart the most. The game had a great ending, the anime had an epic ending, and the manga, with this book, ended, well, disappointing. Without giving much away, it felt incomplete. Most loose ends were tied up, but not all. However, it does a good job at wrapping up the manga, which, all-in-all, was a fun read. Maybe this doesn't quite deserve four stars, but as a manga series, Senran Kagura does, and no part of it deserves one star, especially for such a lame excuse as the price being too high, when each volume is only around ten bucks.

Good in spite of the sudden cancellation.
By KE
The manga adaptation of Senran Kagura got cancelled. This volume hurtles the series towards a conclusion at maximum speed so that it doesn't leave off on a cliffhanger, but the sheer size of the original story means that it was guaranteed to end up being rushed no matter what. While the frantically paced ending leaves something to be desired, there is still a lot of worthwhile content in this volume. The panel layout and artwork remains extremely dynamic, the characteristically erratic tone that swaps between life-or-death drama and goofy character humor seemingly at random is still present, and there are some excellent chapters dedicated to Yagyuu and Hibari's backstories.

best Volume yet !!!
By DEATHWISH1988
after reading and enjoying this awesome 3rd volume it was really worth the wait and totally worth my time as i found that its scenarios and story telling of the final stretch of the story different from the BURST game & even the anime .

also this volume has the most action sequences compared to the last 2 volumes and this also has some fresh funny sexual innuendo parts ( HELL YEAH for the part of ikaruga with the eel's ) .

also amazingly the 2 bonus chapters for both yagyuu n hibari is what made this volume so unique , hopefully i wish TAKKAKI SAN can make even more unique stories of the girls like homura and her crimson squad in new stories not based on the games cuz i swear in the games , anime & OVA there chemistry is soo unique and are the most entertaining of the bunch and there like a family ( god i love Hikage ) .

loved this manga ALOT !!! .

Amazon.com Review
Reinventing the wheel is a terrible waste of time, yet legions of computer programmers do exactly that every day. Geometric Tools for Computer Graphics gives the working graphics programmer a vast collection of programming examples, complex code snippets explained and ready to use. Each chapter is filled with more than just code examples--the explanations needed to understand why these examples work the way they do are given by authors with experience both in writing and in the field.

There is nothing here for the casual graphics programmer and everything for the serious 2-D and 3-D programmer. Thirteen chapters, three appendices, and a three-column index that spans over 30 pages cover everything about computer-graphic geometry, from the basics of using matrices and linear systems to intersecting 3-D objects.

The appendices alone are worth the price: "Numerical Methods," "Trigonometry," and "Basic Formulas for Geometric Primitives" are treasures filled with hard-core examples of the kind that can be put to use right out of the box. Less experienced programmers will find these to be invaluable references, but then there's the rest of the book--nearly 1,000 pages loaded with examples and theory, page after page of information written in a clear, concise voice.

Any hard-core graphics programmer will appreciate the value of the examples presented here, as well as the discussion of theory. After all, there's no need to waste time experimenting with code once the theory is known. Geometric Tools represents the best of both worlds: discussion of theory and code examples built on and culled from years of experience. --Mike Caputo

"An hour of a programmer's time often costs more than the price of a book. By this measure, you hold a volume potentially worth thousands of dollars. That it can be purchased for a fraction of this cost I consider a modern miracle. The amount of information crammed into this book is incredible." --Eric Haines

Great Content But Needs More Thorough Review Of Mathematics
By G. Chastain
I have owned this text for some time and I find it very informative as it covers a great deal of subjects. A review of the table of contents will give an indication of the material covered. The book is not only valuable to graphics programmers but engineers in other disciplines looking for a good approach for solving various geometric problems.

A previous reviewer complained about the notation being "non-standard". The book was written for someone with a mathematical background to include a sound background in vector algebra, geometry and matrix operations. The notation used is in explaining the mathematics behind the solution to a problem is standard >mathematical< notation. If you don't have a background in these areas of mathematics, then you may have a problem understanding it. But fortunately, there are many inexpensive books on those subjects available for purchase that can get you quickly up to speed.

The code is written in the C language. Typically, code is provided only for a specific algorithm (problem being solved). Complete applications that give examples of using the algorithm implementation aren't provided as this is beyond the scope of the book. The scope of the book is to teach you how to solve specific mathematical problems of interest. Not to teach you the many different ways that mathematical solution may be employed in all genres of programming.

The reason that I failed to give this book a 5-star rating is due to the many errors in the text. There was an impressive (to put it kindly) list of errata published on line for the initial printing. The 2nd printing of the text (and how do you know on Amazon if it is a 2nd printing?) is supposed to have most of the errors corrected. However, since the 2nd printing, errors continue to be reported. A complete list of the errata for this book is available at the web site [...].

Having experience in writing many complex technical works, I can say that it takes great dilligence and peer review to capture errors in an intense tecnicaly work such as this book. While this book seems to have excessive errors in it, this type of problem is common with most publishers. There simply isn't enough effort/expense put into having a sufficient number of qualified technical people to review the work and look for errors overlooked by the authors. And believe me, quality peer reviews are necessary for complex technical works such as this one with mathematics on virtually every page. So I do agree with a previous reviewer that you should be cautious at taking the solution/implementation of a mathematical problem from this book at "face value" without questioning if it is correct for all possible test cases. Test and verify the solution.

Given the above comments, I would still recommend this text as it covers so many different topics and problems encountered in 2D and 3D geometry. This book is valuable to many engineers other that programmers working in graphics or game development.

But I would like to see a re-print that has been 100% thoroughly peer reviewed by **mathematicians**, the algorithm implementations analyzed for correctness and an error-free copy printed.

Armed with the errata, this book delivers what it promises
By calvinnme
Many of Mr. Eberly's books leave me dazed and confused. His Game Physics book, though quite useful, is so wedded to the Wild Magic framework that I felt like learning that framework became the task at hand rather than trying to learn underlying algorithms.

This book is different, because it is organized as a collection of tools. Each tool is pretty much independent of all the others, so you can see via the figures what Mr. Eberly is trying to accomplish, read the accompanying text and equations, and then read his pseudocode to understand what you need to do in whatever programming language you are trying to do it in. You can, in most cases, just lift out the algorithm/tool you need. This is the beauty of the book.

The first three or so chapters are dedicated to giving you a quick brush-up in the underlying math, primarily linear algebra. They are useful if you just need to remember something you have already learned at some point, but it is not detailed enough to teach you from scratch.

In short, this is an excellent book on the algorithms needed for the implementation of computer graphics tasks in both two and three dimensions if you already have a good big-picture understanding of computer graphics and a detailed understanding of the mathematics commonly used in such tasks.

Almost Human: The Astonishing Tale of Homo naledi and the Discovery That Changed Our Human Story, by Lee Berger, John Hawks

This first-person narrative about an archaeological discovery is rewriting the story of human evolution. A story of defiance and determination by a controversial scientist, this is Lee Berger's own take on finding Homo naledi, an all-new species on the human family tree and one of the greatest discoveries of the 21st century.

In 2013, Berger, a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, caught wind of a cache of bones in a hard-to-reach underground cave in South Africa. He put out a call around the world for petite collaborators—men and women small and adventurous enough to be able to squeeze through 8-inch tunnels to reach a sunless cave 40 feet underground. With this team of "underground astronauts," Berger made the discovery of a lifetime: hundreds of prehistoric bones, including entire skeletons of at least 15 individuals, all perhaps two million years old. Their features combined those of known prehominids like Lucy, the famous Australopithecus, with those more human than anything ever before seen in prehistoric remains. Berger's team had discovered an all new species, and they called it Homo naledi.

The cave quickly proved to be the richest primitive hominid site ever discovered, full of implications that shake the very foundation of how we define what makes us human. Did this species come before, during, or after the emergence of Homo sapiens on our evolutionary tree? How did the cave come to contain nothing but the remains of these individuals? Did they bury their dead? If so, they must have had a level of self-knowledge, including an awareness of death. And yet those are the very characteristics used to define what makes us human. Did an equally advanced species inhabit Earth with us, or before us? Berger does not hesitate to address all these questions.

Berger is a charming and controversial figure, and some colleagues question his interpretation of this and other finds. But in these pages, this charismatic and visionary paleontologist counters their arguments and tells his personal story: a rich and readable narrative about science, exploration, and what it means to be human.

Worth the wait

I guess it's a bit more like 4.5 for me but why quibble. The only thing in this book I didn't appreciate was the cliffhanger at the end. :) The fact that it's possible to have a cliffhanger like that in a what is, essentially, a science book, is something I'm very grateful about. This discipline has been stagnant for way too long. In all seriousness, though, I wish it was longer, with a bit more details on the expedition and the people who participated in it. It's not all about the fossils, at least it isn't for me. I'd love to have more backstory.

Great read for all interested in the riddles of where we came from.
By Wendy armstrong
I have waiting for this book for such a long time. As a very interested amateur I have long admired both Lee Berger and John Hawks. It was a very good read, went back over Sediba which was great and such great detail and insight into the planning, setting up and management of the Rising Star dig. It showed the dedication of these scientists and their open mindedness and willingness to learn from others, and use of today's technology to further world wide research. Recommend it to all interested readers.

A Game Changer...
By Richard Sutton
I've had an interest in human evolution and paleo anthropology since I was a kid, so from time to time, I try to keep up with current discoveries and academic trends. Almost Human served me well on several levels. First, it is an inside look at the intricacies and politics of presenting new material in a still somewhat staid environment. Lee Berger investigates making use of emerging technologies and sharing his intriguing discoveries with a greater number of scientists and interested parties than is the recognized method. In some cases he is criticized and in others, he finds ways to succeed. This is the story of collaboration that works. It's also a well-paced page turner revealing the tale of finding a truly game-changing trove of Hominid fossils in a completely overlooked, well-known location that the prevailing leaders in the field believed to be exhausted. The authors writing is engaging and personal. What might have been a dry academic paper instead, has enough anecdotal humanity that I felt I was brought right onto the sites alongside the hard-working scientists, cavers and organizers. Finally, it is a detailed look at the nuts and bolts of documenting and retrieving irreplaceable fossil evidence of the wide diversity in the emergence of modern human kind. Even the African Cradle of Humanity, is proving to be much broader than previously imagined. The International Naledi Team should be proud of how their hard work has increased the scope of our understanding of the oldest ancestors. It was a really enjoyable read that I recommend highly to any students of paleo anthropology wanting a feel for what it's like on a dig, or for anyone academic or not, who is interested in the complex briar patch our family tree is finally being revealed to be.

Paul and the Gentile Problem, by Matthew Thiessen

Paul and the Gentile Problem provides a new explanation for the apostle Paul's statements about the Jewish law in his letters to the Romans and Galatians. Paul's arguments against circumcision and the law in Romans 2 and his reading of Genesis 15-21 in Galatians 4:21-31 belong within a stream of Jewish thinking which rejected the possibility that gentiles could undergo circumcision and adopt the Jewish law, thereby becoming Jews. Paul opposes this solution to the gentile problem because he thinks it misunderstands how essentially hopeless the gentile situation remains outside of Christ. The second part of the book moves from Paul's arguments against a gospel that requires gentiles to undergo circumcision and adoption of the Jewish law to his own positive account, based on his reading of the Abraham Narrative, of the way in which Israel's God relates to gentiles. Having received the Spirit (pneuma) of Christ, gentiles are incorporated into Christ, who is the singular seed of Abraham, and, therefore, become materially related to Abraham. But this solution raises a question: Why is it so important for Paul that gentiles become seed of Abraham? The argument of this book is that Paul believes that God had made certain promises to Abraham that only those who are his seed could enjoy and that these promises can be summarized as being empowered to live a moral life, inheriting the cosmos, and having the hope of an indestructible life.

Review

"Matthew Thiessen's re-reading of Paul - bold, learned, and comprehensive - presents an apostle compelled by his apocalyptic convictions to reimagine the relationship of the nations to Israel's god, to the patriarch Abraham, and to Abraham's seed, the Christ. Seemingly intractable passages of Galatians and of Romans shift suddenly into sharp focus. With Paul and the Gentile Problem, Thiessen moves New Testament scholarship into a new age." --Paula Fredriksen, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem

"Matthew Thiessen demonstrates the implications of reading Paul within Second Temple Judaism; moreover, he eschews the traditional impulse to find something wrong in Judaism to understand Paul. By maintaining a historically responsible reading of Paul, one that identifies his target audience as Christ-following non-Jews, Thiessen delivers on several central issues in Pauline studies, including how Paul defined his non-Jews as Abraham's seed and conceptualized their receipt of pneuma, identifying the so-called Jew in Romans 2, and decoding the enigmatic allegory of Galatians 4. Uniquely illuminating is Thiessen's interpretation of Paul's understanding of the promise to Abraham that his seed would be like the stars." --Mark D. Nanos, co-editor of Paul within Judaism: Restoring the First-Century Context to the Apostle

"Drawing on his wide knowledge of ancient Judaism, Thiessen here reframes Paul's theology of his gentile mission, insisting that his polemics are directed only against gentiles attempting the impossible, not against Jews, Judaism, or Jewish practices as such. This combination of fresh thinking and deep research is exactly what we need: it generates many original proposals which are bound to provoke new and important debate." --John Barclay, Lightfoot Professor of Divinity, Durham University

About the Author

Matthew Thiessen received his Ph.D from Duke University in 2010. His first book, Contesting Conversion, won the prestigious Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise (2014). He has also won the Society of Biblical Literature's Regional Scholar Award (2014). He is currently Associate Professor of Religious Studies at McMaster University.
