Exactly what it was meant to explain..

Unity 3 Blueprints is exactly what it says it is: a guide.

Comments like "this isnt for the serious indie developer", and grading the book poorly are based on personal expectations and, in my opinion of course, unfair in this case. Even "serious" people have to start somewhere and if they'd rather buy a guide than dig up and organize the assortment of free ones out there this is a good place to start!

My personal experience with Blueprints:
1. I've become more comfortable with Unity over time without inundation.
2. I've taken that comfort and started to run with it into expansions of their projects; Like making changes to their "marble madness" game to the point of losing hours of time tweaking extras I've imagined. This alone says their instruction worked as designed.
3. The authors will answer questions! Writing a book isnt signing up for a support job but the company attached here is very friendly and willing to support their readers.

Essentially, as stated before, it did exactly what I asked of it: give me a friendly kick into the world of Unity. (and save me the time of gathering random tutorials!) Thanks deeppixel.com folks!

Good intro, but be ready to debug example code

The first project was entertaining, well written, with only a few gotchas. The second project starts introducing lots of fun little errors, inconsistencies, and bad coding practices. Aside from the confusion they create, these also come back to bite you in the third project if you continue to use them, sometimes causing quite a bit of frustration.

Naming conventions; use them. Or at least use properly descriptive variable names. Good variable names can act as partial documentation. Take the time to write your own comments in the code. It helps you learn, and it'll make it a lot easier to go back to a project later and borrow code snippets of key functionality.

It feels like the author was in teacher-mode for the first project, but started getting impatient, and it gets a little crazy later on. There is an errata page on their website, but the author stopped updating that months ago.

Overall, I recommend the book if you're just getting started, and want a gentle introduction... but be ready to fix what made it past the editors. Also, look for a secondary book or resource for the more technical stuff. This book gives adequate but minimal coverage.

Very sloppy and full of errors.

The book has so many errors and is so riddled with confusing language that you will bang your head against the wall trying to make the examples work. You learn more about Unity from debugging the author's work than actually following the author's examples. To make matters worse some of the downloads are missing and even the ZIP files have CRC errors. On the positive side this book does force you, if you actually try to follow it, to learn debugging and how to use Unity's help as well as various users forums and groups. You will definitely need outside resources in order to make things work. To make matters even worse it is not compatible with the latest version of Unity..... so purchase at your own risk.

About the Author
The late SYDNEY BANKS (1931 - 2009) was a well-known author, philosopher and lecturer. He was born in Scotland but spent most of his adult life in Canada's Gulf Islands. In 1973, Banks came to a profound understanding about the Mind and human consciousness and subsequently developed an approach to this understanding which he called The Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought. The effect of Banks' revelation was immediate and significant. A growing community of psychologists, educators, doctors and lay people read Banks' books, attended his lectures at universities and health clinics around North America, and began to build therapeutic programs based on the Three Principles. Today a variety of successful programs for resilience training and personal development have evolved from Banks' original work. Banks passed away at his Salt Spring Island home in spring 2009.

A concise distillation of the spiritual wisdom of the ages

This author had an authentic, direct, transcendent experience of the spiritual essence of life, In this spellbinding book, he has brought together the wisdom of all great sages, msytics and philosophers. He has articulated the underlying truths that are always behind our spiritual and psychological experience of life. He has both lived and taught this understanding for over a quarter of a century. His talks, tapes and books have healed literally hundreds of thousands of people who were suffering chronic distress by reconnecting them with their essential spiritual nature. Anyone reading this book and catching even a glimpse of the truth being shared is sure to find deeper levels of their own inner wisdom, happiness and peace of mind, This book is the most accurate and helpful book I have ever read about the essence of life and what life really is as a spiritual journey. It cuts out the ritual, opinion and dogma and all other "middlemen" and gets right to the essence of what every enlightened sprititual teacher througout history was trying to express to humanity about who we really are and what life really is. This gem of a book reaches all people .

The reviews of this book on this website moved me to tears. It would be hard to add anything. What has touched me is to see patients in mental institutions and jails gain hope and self-respect as they carry this book around in settings that might seem to have the power to destroy the human spirit. This book represents for me the "misssing link"between spirituality and practical day-to-day living . As deep as this book is, everybody seem to be touched by it in a very direct, meaningful way.

About the Author

Steve Cimorelli is an educator, speaker, and author in the field of materials and supply chain management. He holds a BS degree in industrial engineering from the University of Central Florida and is certified at the Fellow level by APICS in production and inventory management (CFPIM). He has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing, engineering, materials, and supply chain management in a variety of industries, including aerospace and defense, industrial equipment, and commercial products. For the past 10 years, Steve has led and consulted with numerous distribution centers and manufacturing plants around the world, developing and implementing Lean manufacturing and materials excellence practices, especially in the areas of kanban, forecasting, line balancing, and production stabilization.

Mr. Cimorelli was first introduced to Lean manufacturing and just-in-time principles in the late 1980s while working toward his certification in production and inventory management (CPIM) with APICS, the Association for Operations Management. As he explains, "These ideas resonated so strongly with me that I began to actively seek opportunities to put them into practice. It wasn’t until 1995, when I joined Square D–Schneider Electric that I saw first-hand how they actually worked. From that point on, I became a vocal advocate and implementer of these practices throughout Schneider Electric and elsewhere through consulting work, teaching, and publishing."

His other published works include "Lean Six Sigma for a Leaner Supply Chain" in Driving Operational Excellence (Metaops Publishing, 2010), "Control of Production and Materials" in the Handbook of Manufacturing Engineering (Marcel Dekker, 1995), and two cover stories in APICS―The Performance Advantage magazine, "Reduced Demand" (2002) and "Anticipating the Reemergence of Demand" (2010). A classic of "poor mouth" literature !

This is the story...of a lovely lady! This book was the bane of every school child in Ireland for decades. It used to be on the curriculum so that, despite the fact that you would have to grit your teeth to read it, it was a bestseller in Ireland. It tells the story of Peig Sayers, a woman who lived in the poor and rural south-west of Ireland in the early 20th century. In this book, everyone was poor, no-one had anything, people were evicted from their hovels, life was hard, people died young, children were barefoot, the livestock slept in the house, it was always raining....well, you get the idea.
Peig was born on the mainland of Ireland, but married a fisherman who lived on the Blasket islands, a small collection of islands a few miles off the coast of Kerry. Tough as things were on the mainland, things were tougher still here! You were lashed by the Atlantic, the wind could blow you off the cliffs, and you could be drowned while you were fishing, and that was on a good day! The book tells of her struggle to be accepted by the islanders, how she brought up her large family, how she coped with the death of some of her sons fishing, and the folklore, stories, and culture all around her.
This book, and others like it from other authors on other islands ("The Islander" being another good example) formed a literary style which became known as "the poor mouth". They all share similar characteristics as they described the oppresive hardships suffered stoically by the people. Even now in Ireland, anyone whinging about their bad situation would be dismissed as "putting on the poor mouth" and everyone would know what was meant. There is even a spoof "poor mouth" book by Flann O'Brien, which is well worth reading as an antidote to all the hardship and depression!
Now that Peig is no longer force fed down poor school children's throats, it has been re-appraised as a valuable historical record of western Irish culture, and no longer as an instrument of torture. Now that you don't HAVE to read it, more people now seem to WANT to read it! The book was originally written in the Irish language since that was the only language Peig spoke, but a translation in English is available.
If you want a glimpse of an Ireland now long gone (and it really is long gone, despite what anyone might tell you), you can't go wrong with Peig. Just make sure you have a good supply of prozac close to hand.

An intriguing journey...

A quirky and affecting book tracing the intellectual progeny of Xavier de Maistre's "Voyage autour de ma chambre." Yes, there is an entire history behind the notion of taking a "voyage around one's room," mostly focusing on the 19th and early 20th centuries. At its best, this book is an engaging and philosophical rumination on travel, rich with curious characters and interesting ideas: "Room journeys serve the exploration of our own habitus, which of necessity remains hidden to our own gaze, and only through this trick travel can be made visible....The journey is a type of communication with a space to which the traveler knows he is connected." But not infrequently the book drifts into obscurity: "The room journey neither leads to nor opens up any paradise, but rather plays out the expulsion from it ever anew. It is not a conscious experiment, or a short-term exception, but rather an inevitable and involuntary thwarting of every attempt to achieve it. The room journey instead lasts in perpetuity." Stiegler has made the regrettable decision to break up his narrative into short, almost fragmentary chapters, which disrupt the flow of his narrative. As a result, the work seems somewhat less than the sum of its parts. I stuck around happily for 150 pages and then lost interest. A great idea with flashes of brilliance for travel enthusiasts -- ultimately only serious students of late modern European urban culture are likely to be satisfied with this book.

For individuals who use spells, rituals, charms, and recipes as part of their spiritual path, correspondences are often an important part of magick. Author Eileen Holland, a Wiccan priestess and solitary eclectic witch, began noting correspondences when researching the ancient names of plants while living in Egypt. The information she included in her Book of Shadows was vast and she spent a decade transferring correspondences to her computer-all the while continuing research and adding more.

In Holland's Grimoire of Magickal Correspondences, Ms. Holland shares her extensive knowledge with the world, believing that the "best way to guard the Mysteries is to reveal them." Spanning 305 pages, this book is intended for experienced practitioners of magick and organized alphabetically according to intent. It's obvious that Ms. Holland is an excellent researcher who aims at making esoteric information accessible to those ready and able to use it. If correspondences are an important part of your spiritual practice, you'll benefit from the wealth of information found in Holland's Grimoire of Magickal Correspondences.

Needs to be rewritten

Lots of information but this book is very messy and disorganized. It needs an index. The table of contents is useless as it only contains chapter numbers with no descriptions. The correspondences are listed alphabetically so you need to know what you want to and then look it up like you are looking up a word in a dictionary.
Again good information but lacks index.

a good scholarly examination of Gardner's Wiccan roots

Philip Heselton's book "Wiccan Roots: Gerald Gardner and the Modern Witchcraft Revival" should be recommended along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon" as a solid, scholarly examination of the roots of modern Wicca.
Heselton doesn't deal in unsupported claims about Wiccan history as far too many other Wiccan writers do. He sticks to the facts, and presents the results of his research in a clear, easy-to-read manner.
Like any good researcher, Heselton raises many new questions that need addressing while clearing up longstanding misunderstandings. The author doesn't pretend to have the definitive answer about whether Gardner really was just passing on an existing tradition or was instead inspired to put together the religion now known as Wicca.
Hesleton provides compelling evidence for the existence of a group of self-described witches who did in fact perform an initiation on Gardner, thus giving him a formal introduction to witchcraft. What remains to be determined, though, is whether what that group of witches practiced was anything like Gardnerian Wicca, and whether they did in fact have any sort of established pagan "tradition" which they passed on to him, rather than just a mishmash of occult and pagan lore.
Heselton has done the Wiccan community a great service. His book should be an excellent starting point, along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon," into further scholarly research about our pagan past

Most Comprehensive Research on Gerald Gardner Yet

This book focuses on Gerald Gardner and his web of contacts woven in its entirety.
Compiled by perhaps the most authoritative researcher on Gardner to date Philip Heselton, the text is bound with wonderful illustration from the personal journals of Gardner's associates, including extracts and photos from the previously unseen Boscastle archives, providing the most compelling evidence of Gardner's connections with 'Old Dorothy', his High Priestess 'Dafo', and involvement with the New Forest Coven in repelling the threatened WWII Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom.
It is immediately apparent the author has not only researched current knowledge to its furthest conclusion but has also taken the brave step of educated speculation on other associations, which is sure to provide further researchers with useful data.
One for any student into the roots of modern Paganism and the Wiccan religion - Excellent.

Essential Reading in the History of Wicca

This book, along with Hutton's _Triumph of the Moon_, is essential reading for anyone interested in an accurate history of Wicca. Heselton provides solid evidence of the people and places behind Gardner's discovery / invention of Wicca, offers his well-measured conjectures, and fills some of the gaps Hutton alludes to in his work. For those of us interested in the history of the Craft, a very, VERY important little book.
