About the Author
W. Robert Knechel is the Ernst and Young LLP Professor of Accounting in the Fisher School of Accounting at the University of Florida. Professor Knechel holds a B.B.A. from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has served as the resident auditing research fellow at KPMG Peat Marwick LLP. He holds a CPA in the state of Florida and is an active member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Florida Institute of CPAs and the Institute of Internal Auditors. Professor Knechel has served as the Chairman of the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association and was responsible for initiating the Biannual Auditing Education Conference and the Auditing Section Mid-Year Meeting. He also served as the Director of Education for the Auditing Section. Professor Knechel has written extensively on auditing issues in research and education for over 15 years, having published over 30 articles during that time in respected academic journals. He has actively pursued the development of case materials for auditing classes. He ahs also made presentations on auditing research, practice and education at numerous forums in the United States, Australia and Europe. Most recently, Professor Knechel has revised the Excellence in Audit Education program sponsored by Coopers & Lybrand LLP. In April 2006 he will be the Ernst & Young Professor of Financial Accounting at the University of Auckland.

Excellent book

I am a newcomer to the field of photovoltaics and was looking for a book simple to understand but robust in content that would convey the fundamental concepts effectively. So far I am halfway through the book, reading during my coffee breaks and before bedtime and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I came to choose this book not by anyone's recommendation or referral but by the affordability and judging the table of content and few sample pages. Most of the other books in this area are so expensive, you have to sort of gamble a hefty amount of money to gain a very little perspective on the nature and scope of the field of photovoltaics. This book so far seems to be very good except there are some countable number of typos that sort of distract during the reading.

good book, but horrible on a kindle

Overall this is a good book, more mathematically detailed than Green's classical book on solar cells, but not quite the same clarity and writing quality as Green. But the book does have a lot of good information, and I learned a lot reading it.

However, on the Kindle this is almost unreadable in places (kindle classic or fire hd). The equations are in tiny fonts (unchangeable) and many graphs and figures are so small and blurry that you can't read them. Amazon really needs to do a better job on the kindle tech books it releases.

LOVE IT!

I NEVER WRITE REVIEWS, BUT THIS ONE WAS WORTH IT! This is a GREAT book for people wanted to jump head first into C#. I'm the type of person that never reads a technical book from cover to cover... I read enough to understand what I'm doing and then use the book as a reference. This is the perfect book for that! It gives you just the right amount of knowledge to start working with C# and tons of samples that actually work! I loved it so much I bought two copies -- one for home and one for the office.

Excellent, worth for those who want to learn

This book is packed with knowledge. Every page is worth its weight in gold. I read it from cover to cover. Re-doing EVERY exercise manually. Trust me, I know what I'm saying.
I worked with the 1st Edition. Took me 8 months to finish the book thorougly. Yes there is some mistakes and typos. But if you understand the text, you can correct these mistakes easily. As a reward, the exercises I redo is always better than the book's ones.
Some persons complaint that there's too much authors resulting in style discrepancy and the chapters slightly overlap their introduction. Yes it's true. And I found that it's rather a GREAT advantage. Just because each author gives you the best of their expertise. Do you think an author of ASP.NET could give you detailed explanation all the intricacies of the C# & .NET runtime environment?
The repetition of some concepts is not really a waste, this book is advanced. I found that it's rather good. Actually, I found this book doesn't have enough pages. Sometime I can't do better than 3 pages a day.
The chapters related to the .NET and C# language fundamental (Chapter 1 to 10) and advanced techniques (File IO, ASDI, COM+, GDI+, .NET Remoting, Windows Services and Security) are simply wonderful. They represent +80% of the book. I rated the ADO.NET and XML chapters 4 stars. The weakest part is ASP.NET, Web Services. I wish the author had choosen a simpler example and add may be few more chapters. The chapter on Custom Control is OK. In anyway, I can't blame the author, to get serious on ASP.NET, you'd rather buy a specific book.
I particularly like the side notes and the Appendix giving a background comparison C# and traditional languages (C++, Java, VB).
If you expect from this book a collection of recipes of code ready for cut and paste, then you will be likely disappointed. This book is for those who are willing to LEARN. The C# language and OOP concept itself is not that difficult. It's rather the .NET Framework itself and how to use wisely the wealth of its base classes.
One reviewer said "too many authors who don't know their stuff". Not true, while I was redoing the exercise, I perceived the style of each of them. Generally they're good. And when needed, the authors answer to my emails. I'm an experienced programmer, when something is bad, I can see it easily.
I come from a VB + ASP background, thanks to this book, I now have a pretty solid knowledge of .NET and a pure style C# programmer. I have had hard time to grasp the whole stuff but now I can tell you that I'm happy to leave the VB world.
I wholeheartly recommend this book to anyone who want to learn C# _AND_ how to make useful application with it. Be courageous, spend some time, you won't be disappointed.

An excellent book in my opinion

I am enjoying this book so much that I thought I'd write a review about how I felt about this book. The second edition of Professional C# is really an excellent piece of work. The authors have done a real good job covering a wide range of topics. Not only did I get to learn the basics of the C# language, but the book took me well into the depths of the .NET framework class library. The book starts with a thorough explanation on what the .NET framework and the CLR is all about and where C# as a language fits in. The C# language is introduced in 3 detailed chapters - The basics of the language, Object oriented features in the language, and advanced topics on C#. These chapters had some really nice examples and gave me a strong foundation in understanding the constructs of the language. This is followed by an introduction to the core classes in the framework and how to put them to use. From then on, there are 18 more great chapters covering the framework class library in detail right from writing Windows Forms Applications, Data access with ADO.NET, Controls and Data binding, how to work with the XML classes in the framework, ASP.NET, COM(+) interoperability techniques, GDI+, Web Services, Remoting, Security, Windows services, ADSI etc., You name it and there's probably a topic on the subject covered in sufficient detail to get you up and running. It's hard to pack such exhaustive content all into one book, but they've done a great job at that. Overall, I am very happy with the book and it's well worth the money I spent for this 1220 page tome.

About the Author

HUNG-GAY FUNG, PhD, is Curators' Professor of Finance, Dr. Y. S. Tsiang Endowed Chair Professor of Chinese Studies, and department chair in the Finance and Legal Studies Department, College of Business Administration, University of Missouri-St. Louis. His areas of research and teaching include international finance, financial risk management, and banking. He has published over 150 scholarly papers in various journals. He has also published seven books, numerous book chapters, and many teaching cases.

GLENN KO, CFA, is an executive director of the UBS Asian Credit Research team, covering corporate credits. He focuses on Chinese properties and industrials. He has extensive experience in Asia's straight and convertible bond markets, with previous work experience in proprietary trading desks, sell-side research, and rating advisory at financial institutions, such as Daiwa, JPMorgan and HSBC. Prior to these, he worked at Moody's as a credit rating analyst.

JOT YAU, PhD, CFA, is Dr. Khalil Dibee Endowed Chair in Finance at the Albers School of Business and Economics, Seattle University. Since joining Seattle University in 2001, he has served as the chair of the department of finance and MSF program director. He has published numerous articles and chapters in finance journals and professional books. He is the coeditor and coauthor of two books. He has served on several editorial boards, and was the associate editor and special editor (Risk Management) of the Journal of Alternative Investments. He cofounded Strategic Options Investment Advisors Ltd., a Hong Kong-based investment advisory firm. He served on the board of directors of Group Health Credit Union and of the Northwest Hedge Fund Society, where he was also the treasurer.

Drug companies have institutionalized deception, said a former pharmaceutical executive at a 1990 Senate hearing. And former New York Times reporter Petersen details these deceptions with information that will be startling even to those who closely follow the news on big pharma. Her subtitle, How the Pharmaceutical Companies Transformed Themselves into Slick Marketing Machines and Hooked the Nation on Prescription Drugs, is most effectively illustrated in a chapter detailing Parke-Davis's aggressive marketing of the epilepsy drug Neurontin for everything, in blatant disregard of regulations against promoting drugs for uses not approved by the FDA. Such reporting, rather than style or analysis, is Petersen's strength. Much of what she recounts—such as the glut of copycat drugs like antacids, and marketers' lavish wining and dining of doctors—has been covered in books by others, like Marcia Angell. But Petersen fleshes out these issues and names prominent doctors who, she says, are on the take. She is particularly strong on the ghostwriting of medical journal articles by advertising agencies. She also covers less familiar matters, like the environmental impact of drug residues in water. There are quibbles; for instance, Petersen accepts without examination the bromide that most people take prescription drugs as a quick fix. But she ends with tough, sound suggestions for reforms to make the pharmaceutical industry honest and to protect consumers. (Mar.)

Where are all the acolades (and reviews) for this brilliant book?

After just finishing this book - as good a piece of investigative journalism as they come - I'm as shocked by the lack of reviews here as I am by seeing the ugly revelation of the "man behind the curtains" true face of Big Pharma.

Petersen has chosen an enormous subject, the debased fall and ugly spectacle of medical scientists and researchers, the entire pharmaceutical industry, and yes, most if not all of our physicians failing in their duties to their patients in order to grab another hundred bucks or so in bribes. I was shocked, angry, enraged and finally repelled by what I read, in that order, but was also grateful to Petersen's compulsively easy-to-read style that allowed me to truly understand what I was reading.

Between this expose, and Gary Taubes' clear and concise outline (in Good Calories, Bad Calories) of how the public has been mislead and lied to about cholesterol, our diets, heart disease and statins - I'm ready to throw 'the book' at the entire complex, hold Senate Hearings, throw people in jail, and start medicine from scratch. Which might not be such a bad idea, because after reading this book I encourage everyone to begin their next annual physical with the words: "And whose payroll are *you* on?"

I recommend this book, and Taubes' book, as REQUIRED READING for anyone who is breathing at the moment - and would like to continue doing so.

Accurate and Shocking

I lived with a neurologist for 4 years during which time he switched from being a 'consultant' for as many pharmas as he could to being a top VP at a very large pharma in NJ. I have seen all the dinners, the off label discussions, the trips to the virgin island and so on. Your book may shock readers, but its content is very accurate. Thank you for putting the truth out there. I was shocked when I learned what was going on and have since had a very bad view of the pharma industry. I will recommend your book to as many people as I can, especially people with young children who could be taking all these mood altering drugs.

A fascinating read

Great writing style making it a hard book to put down. Every medical provider should read this book. As a provider for 15 years I have seen the tactics, I have watched drugs come in as samples and being promoted as some the best thing next to sliced cheese. I went to the dinners where "scientific information" was presented and thought that I wasn't smart enough to understand exactly why the drug was better(frequently, these same drugs were pulled from market). I have seen meds like neurontin being added to my patient med lists for a variety of reasons. Hmm I would think, I just don't read enough. Well, I will continue my wait and see attitude about new drugs. Something that sounds too good to be true....probably is.
