Powerful and Lifechanging

I was there at those meetings in 2010 and heard Sophal Ung share his testimony. Reading the book and once again hearing is stirring my heart to follow Jesus no matter the cost. Thankful to Randy Clark and Susan Thompson who made this book a reality.

Excellent Account of A Man's Journey with God through the Khmer Rouge Genocide and More

Having lived in Cambodia and seen the impact of the Khmer Rouge and years of civil wars on the Cambodian people and their nation, this book really touched me. I have read other accounts of Cambodian's who survived the Khmer Rouge, but this was the first account of a Christian. I found the spiritual insight and details fascinating. The supernatural stories are simply amazing and at times left me speechless. From Sophal's encounter praying for King Norodom Sihanouk to be healed to meeting an angel that helps deliver her child in the jungle, this book is an amazing testament of a man who has laid down his life for Christ. I would recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about Christian supernatural experiences as well as aspiring missionaries, evangelists, or people curious about how God works and moves with his people.

Wow!!! I am so deeply moved by the life of Sophal and I know there is still more to come. I've read every biography out there on christian revivalists and leaders. But I've never read of someone whose life so closely resembled that of the apostle Paul. The testimony of this humble servant of God will greatly increase your faith and hunger.

There are six stories with a good mix of stories such as fantasy

This is the second book in the first grade series of five. There are six stories with a good mix of stories such as fantasy, nonfiction and realistic fiction. At the end of each story there's a paragraph or two about the author/illustrator and a suggested activity. If you have other Harcourt reading books be aware the Collection series may have some reoccurring stories (hence Collections). We also enjoy Harcourt's Trophies (I like Trophies more actually) but I don't think there's enough reoccurring stories to not purchase Collections.

It's a bird. It's a plane. Nope, it's Hawk.

I'm always sad to see one of Kathi's series end, but I know it's going to be the perfect good-bye. Hawk is no exception. We've seen the other pride members find their mates, now it's Hawk's turn.

First, Awnia, his fated mate, is powerful. Supremely so. She's a Sun goddess (how cool, right?) and has some royal (hint, hint) blood flowing through her veins. But, those same powers also cause to her be hunted. I won't say by who, nanner nanner nanner, because it's a big part of the story. Thankfully, Awnia is able to get through to Vinnie, a dragon and member of the Pride from a previous book in the series. They have a history together and can communicate telepathically when he's in his human form. Vinnie enlists Hawk's help in finding Awnia. His ability to shift into a hawk comes in mighty handy. Awnia is found and taken to a safe place on Pride land.

Meanwhile, we also learn a little more about Hawk. The place he found Awnia in is his hometown. He decides to visit his childhood home, where he is welcomed by Deacon and Margo. They've worked for his parents for years and love him. But we learn he hasn't spoken to his parents in years because they are evil people who don't deserve the title parents. They've always felt Hawk was a monster and tried to have him "fixed." Add in the fact that Hawk is an elite shifter, can shift into numerous animals, and they will go to any lengths to try and get rid of him. Did you catch that? Any lengths.

Hawk and Awnia meet as she's on her way to Hawk's house for a Pride meeting about her situation. Hawk knows right away she's his mate, but Awnia was always told she could never have a mate. She decides to be with him for as long as she can, while trying to keep everyone safe. Of course, Hawk won't let her deny their connection. She's his and he's hers. Psst...Hawk can be very persuasive. ;-)

There's love, danger, sexy times, mysteries are solved, lies are revealed, and a family is reunited. I loved Hawk and Awnia together and it was great catching up with the couples from the previous books. I'm going to miss these characters, so thank goodness for rereads. I highly recommend this book, but do suggest you read the series in order for continuity and full enjoyment of the characters.

A special shifter needs a special mate

We say good by to another series that I am going to miss. I enjoyed the diversified characters and pairings of our favorite characters. Hawk was special so he needed a special mate and Ms. Barton gave him a goddess. Awnia is a powerful being with powerful enemies, when she is hurt she finds herself with Samuel's pride. Never expecting to find a mate she pushes Hawk away to keep him safe. I really like them as a couple, they filled a void that the other was missing. They both needed love , to give love and to trust they were loveable. The story was easy to follow and read fast. The power of love, family, friendship and the magic between all the characters is amazing to read about. They rally to protect their own from any and all threat. Hawk keeping true to his abilities always makes me smile and the necromancer ability adds some fun. My only fault with the story is the confrontation with Temptress, it was built up to be something major enough to frighten a goddess but seemed anticlimactic when it happened. Still a good read and I look forward to moving on to another series by this author.

Another great ending to another series

Oh again another series comes to an end. I'll be wondering what to do with my life again for a bit and probably end up rereading the series all over again because then it won't feel like it's over completely.

Two people who never thought they would ever find a mate for them meet and instant sparks!

Hawk is an elite shifter with some unique abilities. He doesn't believe he may ever find a mate who will look beyond the weird abilities to the man he is and love him.

Awnia is a goddess that has been cursed by her mother and lives on the Earth realm. Vinnie and her met hundreds of years ago, now she must call upon him again to come help her before she dies at the hands of the Hatter. Awnia knows she's bounds to be alone until her mother finds her and kills her, for if she were to find a mate, Temptress (her mother) would kill him.

Can Hawk convince her they are destine to be together. Will their bond withstand the many obstacles about to be place before them?

Last Lectures is, as the name suggests, a series of lectures given over the radio by former World Chess Champion Jos� Ra�l Capablanca just a few months before he died. While he was preparing these lectures, he dictated them to his wife, Olga Capablanca, who typed them. As a result, we have them today. Perhaps more than any other player in the history of chess, Jose Raoul Capablanca was noted for his ability to cut through the complexities of modern chess theory and find the winning line in grandmaster tournament play. Capablanca was often called the greatest natural chess player of all time. His clarity of vision, his simplicity and precision of style were legendary. Here, in these twelve lectures originally delivered by short-wave radio to a Latin American audience shortly before his death in 1942, the qualities that made Capablanca one of the game's uniquely great masters are reflected in a timeless legacy of chess wisdom. His observations on the fundamental principles of sound chess thinking are expressed so clearly and simply that a novice can follow them; yet they touch on such profoundly important underlying themes that the most advanced player will benefit by absorbing them. In fact, these lectures reveal that much of Capablanca's supposedly instinctive genius for unraveling highly complex situations over the board consisted of a deeper and sounder understanding of the basic principles of endgame strategy (and the ability to see the endgame structure foreshadowed during the tactical maneuvering of the middle game) than that possessed by any other player of his time. Last Lectures contains Capablanca's chess “instinct” preserved for a later generation. Over and over again he stresses the vital importance of knowing how to play the endings. He gives simple rules of proper endgame play many of which he says are often overlooked by top flight masters. He shows how to recognize the winning elements of the commonest endings: Rook and Pawn, Bishop vs. Knight. He gives his analysis of the relative value of the pieces. Even in this era of exhaustive analysis of the openings, there is wisdom and profit to be gained from his chapter on the Ruy Lopez. Perhaps the greatest pleasure for the modern player, whether he is a beginner or an expert, in reading Last Lectures will come from Capablanca's lively anecdotes and strongly expressed opinions about his contemporaries. Using their play as examples for his observations on universal chess truths, Capablanca rates (and sometimes rakes) Morphy, Steinitz, Emanuel Lasker, Nimzovch, Alekhine, Reshevsky, Frank Marshall and other chess immortals. About the Author
Jose Capablanca was World Chess Champion from 1921 to 1927. He was born on 19 November 1888 in Havana, Cuba. His wife, Olga Capablanca, was a Russian princess although he said she knew nothing about chess. She was his second wife and he was her second husband. She was born Olga Evgenyevna Choubaroff on 23 September 1898 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Olga met her second husband, Jose Capablanca, in 1934 at a function given by the Cuban Consulate in New York. He was apparently immediately attracted to her and pursued her for a long time before she finally agreed to be married to him. They married in New York on October 20, 1938. When Capablanca was four years old, he learned to play chess just by watching his father play. His father was surprised when he corrected an illegal move, so his father played him a game and the child won the first game. When he was five, his father took him to the chess club. It was discovered that the players at the club were unable to beat him at queen odds. On March 8, 1942 Capablanca collapses at the Manhattan Chess Club and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at the age of 53. Olga later married Admiral Joseph James Jocko Clark. Admiral Joseph James "Jocko" Clark, USN (November 12, 1893 – July 13, 1971) was an admiral in the United States Navy, who commanded aircraft carriers during World War II. He also commanded the 7th fleet during the Korean war. He had a ship the USS Clark named after him which Olga christened at the launching on March 24, 1979. Olga Capablanca died on April 24, 1994 at age 95. She bequeathed the entire archives of Jose Raoul Capablanca to the Manhattan Chess Club.

About the Author
Liz Heffernan, LLB (Dublin), LL.M. (Dalhousie), LLM & JSD (Chicago), BL, admitted New York & US Federal Bar, is an Associate Professor and Fellow at Trinity College Dublin. She was formerly a lecturer in law at University College Dublin (2001-2007), Visiting Professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law, Lexington, Virginia, USA (1995-1996 and 1999-2000), and Law Clerk at the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit (1998-1999) and the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (1997-1998 & 2000-2001). Liz Heffernan has been teaching evidence in Irish law schools since 2001 and has published nationally and internationally on the subject. Una Ni Raifeartaigh, BCL, BL, is a Senior Counsel. She was formerly a research assistant at the Law Reform Commission (1988-1991) and Reid Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology at Trinity College Dublin (1991-1996). She commenced practice as a Junior Counsel in 1993 and has been a Senior Counsel since 2009. Una Ni Raifeartaigh has twenty years' experience as a criminal law practitioner. A former academic, she publishes articles on criminal evidence (and more broadly within the field of criminal justice) and speaks regularly at conferences.

This was an utter failure. The pastel illustrations of cute children with over-sized, tear-drop shaped eyes failed to earn even a glance from my two boys. I cannot fault the text, which is short and appropriately Christmassy. I can recommend this only to Precious Moments fans. Maybe little girls like this sort of thing? I don`t know though: the sheep look more like poodles, to me.
