Life is good or so thought high school teacher Kathryn Lyons. Her beloved husband Jack, a trans-Atlantic pilot, and Kathryn have shared a strong relationship over the years they have been together. Their teenage daughter Mattie is intelligent and loving though a bit too independent as fifteen-year old girls seem to be, at least with their moms. However, her happy family lifestyle explodes into pieces when Jack's plane blows up while in the air ten miles from Ireland.
Already struggling with grief, Kathryn is stunned by the incessant questions about Jack, their marriage, and even Mattie's personal life. Rumors abound that Jack lived a secret life. Soon the media accuses Jack of pilot error and the flight investigators believe he committed suicide. After finding some inexplicable notes in their home, Kathryn is unable to sit idle as her past and her spouse seem to have their history rewritten so she begins her own inquiries. As she searches into Jack's past with the help of union official Robert Hart, Kathryn wonders exactly who her husband truly was?
THE PILOT'S WIFE is an SST-paced story line that takes the reader along for an intriguing ride. Kathryn is an interesting character struggling with what she learns about the husband she never knew. Robert adds little to the plot beyond informing the widow of the tragedy. He adds an unnecessary betrayal and romantic subplot that takes the audience on a inclement weather detour. However, when Ann Shreve's novel stays with Kathryn's revelations about Jack, the story becomes a great thriller worth reading.

And she didn't disappoint me there. Anita takes you on a journey through a woman's self-discovery as she struggles with her husband's death and the reality that she didn't know him like she thought she did. It is a portrayal of a strong woman who sets out to learn who her husband really was ~~ while at the same time working to protect her daughter and helping her through this trying time as well as exploring her self-realization.
It is a quick read as well as an engrossing one. Though the book doesn't stir up lots of debates like Oprah's other selections, the topic of adultery still hits too close to home. However, it is interesting to see how Kathryn deals with it during her grieving process and comes to the realization that none of us really know another person. This book may sound depressing, but it really isn't. You have to read between the lines to see that there is a gift of hope that Anita was trying to share with her readers as you grow along with Kathryn on her journey.

A Book for Real People in the Real World

"The Pilot's Wife" was a haunting, yet realistic tale. I usually read at night, yet I found it hard to read this particular book right before going to sleep. The book seemed slow going at first, but in the end, your patience will be awarded. I will admit that the story line was somewhat disturbing, yet in a good way. Can you ever really know you know someone? So many times, it seems that couples enter into relationships expecting their passion to one day subside. This idea has been accepted as normal in today's society. Yet, Kathryn, the main character learns that allowing physical, emotional and intellectual intimacy to fade in her marriage was a grave mistake. I am currently engaged and, if anything, I learned from the book the value of honesty, trust, openess and, overall, reality. There are no fairy tale marriages or relationships. However, accepting this fact and living in the light of the truth will free your soul. In the end, Katherine learned about her mistakes, as well as her husband's, and we can all learn through this awesome novel about the realities of love and loss.

In the first chapter, Tissol argues that verbal wit and wordplay are closely linked to Ovidian metamorphoses. Wit challenges the ordinary conceptual categories of Ovid's readers, disturbing and extending the meanings and references of words. Thereby it contributes on the stylistic level to the readers' apprehension of flux. On a larger scale, parallel disturbances occur in the progress of narratives. In the second and third chapters, the author examines surprise and abrupt alteration of perspective as important features of narrative style. We experience reading as a transformative process not only in the characteristic indirection and unpredictability of Ovid's narrative but also in the memory of his predecessors. In the fourth chapter, Tissol shows how Ovid subsumes Vergil's Aeneid into the Metamorphoses in an especially rich allusive exploitation, one which contrasts Vergil's aetiological themes with those of his own work.

Simon got what he needed, even though at first he wasn't sure exactly what he needed only what he wanted. He was warned to be careful and not jump into anything. However , had he not, he wouldn't finally have what made him whole and happy. Such a great story!!

I got this free for a honest review

Submitting to Simon is the fifth book in the Sir series by author Stormy Glenn. I have followed all the books so far, but I think if you did not you would not be lost in this story.
Simon needs someone to accept him just the way he is. He does not want a mindless drone he wants a fiesty, full of life partner he can dominate in the bedroom but has their own thoughts out of the bedroom.
Jamison loves to be spanked. Direct, bratt, sarcastic perfect for Simon. He just has to learn that he is worth all the effort Simon is willing to put into a relationship with him.
I loved how these two played off each other. They are night and day but so alike in some ways. Each has what the other needs. I love how protective Simon is. I also like how he knows his sub needs certain freedoms to really come into his own. I love Jamie give me a bratty sub and I am a happy camper. I like his sass.
I really felt the connection between these two and want more! I cannot wait for the next Sir book to come out and find out who falls in love next.

Great update to great text

The 5th edition contains significant updates and refreshes of many elements of the text. While Practical Reliability Engineering was already a must have reference for anyone working in the reliability profession, the update is required reading. I've long used this text as a goto reference for the myriad of tools, considerations, and references permitting me to solve problems. Now, it's a bit less slanted toward the old military handbooks, and a bit easier to read.

I highly recommend this one, even if you have an earlier edition.

Must Read for All Engineers

This book was exactly geared to my needs as a young engineer embarking on a career in reliability. The content was concise, clear while providing extensive breadth into the complex and most often misunderstood engineering discipline. This is a must read for all engineers! My only gripe is that I have struggled to obtain the solutions manual which accompanies this book (the web link reference quoted in the book failed to deliver !

The title of this book accurately reflects what the book delivers. The book introduces the basic concepts of reliability engineering and demonstrates its application to a range of mechanical and electronic system examples. The 5th edition of Practical Reliability Engineering hits the mark by adding extensive software-based solutions to many of the already abundant example problems. The software-based solutions take the "practicality" of this already practical book to the next level. The new edition also includes new chapters on Monte Carlo analysis and reliability demonstration. Practical Reliability Engineering is a highly useable book that represents a worthwhile addition to both a student's and practitioner's reliability engineering resources. The book is solid and worth having even if you own an earlier edition.

About the Author
COLONEL PERCY HARRISON FAWCETT was born in 1867 in Devon, England. At the age of nineteen he was given a commission in the Royal Artillery. Later he performed secret service work in North Africa. He found himself bored with Army life and learned the art of surveying, hoping to land a more interesting job. Then in 1906 came the offer from the Society, his ticket to adventure.

A Window into a Bygone Era in a Lost World

I first read of Fawcett in Lost Cities and Ancient Mysteries of South America and continued the study with The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon. The latter book is where you should start and learn about Fawcett's explorations and adventures in South America. But this book, written by Fawcett and published by his son after Fawcett disappeared, gives a window into a lost era. The early 1900s found South America in a wild west time of danger, upheaveal, dictators, savage natives and everything else that could inspire hundreds of movies. Then Fawcett became intrigued with legends of lost cities and disappeared looking for one. One of the most famous disappearances of the 20th Century, many rumors came out of the jungle, but never his remains. A must for students of the long-gone age of exploration. Percy Harrison Faecett's Masterpiece of Adventure

Colonel Fawcett experienced more adventures in his life than most of us could endure. In his highly detailed account he takes us with him into the Amazon jungle where giant anacondas, deadly insects, Indians shooting poisoned arrows, horrible diseases, and countless other dangers become a part of his daily life. What is more, Colonel Fawcett uses clear sentences, abundant knowledge, and on-site photographs which he developed himself to make his detailed account come alive. This was a remarkable man who never returned from his last expedition. This book tells the truth and tells it well. Buy it. You will read it, treasure it in your library, and end up buying copies for your friends.
