A Much Needed Book On Honest Answers About Homosexuality

How thankful I am to both LifeWay Church Resources and Pam Gibbs for this book.
I am in full time ministry visting with Churches on the topic of homosexuality. I share my testimony of coming out of homosexuality and how my church ministered to me and how they taught me about Jesus and how the Holy Spirit convicted me that homosexuality was not what God intended. During the question and answer times of my presentations the teenagers have a ton of questions. I share with them my honest answers and my experiences. This is a book I like to leave with the youth pastor and some of the youth leaders as it is an awesome resource for them. Pam answers commonly asked questions by teenagers and young adults such as what actually is God's design for our sexuality, what does the Bible really say about homosexuality, and the most heart touching question that is ask is Charlene, how can I help my friend who's struggling with homosexuality? She also asks questions of the reader and has small group discussion questions. A great resource indeed!

I thought this book was slightly misleading. Given the title 'Designed By God' I thought this book would be similar to the documentary 'The Bible Tells Me So'.
As a Christian with many gay friends, I have learned about the beauty of our differences.
I truly believe that God made everyone the way that He wanted them to be, and that He doesn't make mistakes. And while the book sort of addresses the fact that homosexuality isn't a choice, it still suggests that through prayer and devotion to God one can be released from the 'sin' of being gay. As human beings, I'll admit we are all sinful and fall short, but one of my favorite professors in seminary defined sin as 'a conscious or unconscious wrong-doing by going against God and His nature'

Better than most Community Policing texts

I am now preparing for the Lieutenant's promotional exam and this is required reading. My department has frequently changed the community policing textbook so this is the third book on the subject I've been forced to read. By far, this is the best book of the three. It is not insulting or too much of the "hug a thug" mentality. It is well written and organized. I can't foresee anyone reading it for pleasure or casual reading, but it's not too painful if you must read it.

Had to read this book for a promotional test at work and it was terrible

This book is terrible. It is all scientific stastical studies that are not true to the real police world. The authors that wrote this book are authors, not police. I don't see why anyone would read this book for fun. If you have to read this book for a promotional test good luck. Also, I would try to see if they have a cliff notes of the book. It made no sense and was a pain to read. The only good thing about the book is you can buy used ones for cheaper or you can return the book after you are done with it.

This book is as beautiful as it is big

This book is as beautiful as it is big. I do wish more information could have accompanied each picture. However, it will look great on any coffee table, provided there is enough space. Definitely not a dust collector, as one may flip its numerous pages, on special occasions, in order to be taken to those simpler times. This book is a perfect gift for those who draw inspiration from a different era.

Exceptionally large book with outstanding photographs from a different era

I've lived in Germany for the last 5 years and always looked for books that contained vintage photographs of German cities I visited. The amount of photos and quality included in this book is unmatched from anything I've ever seen. From every part of Germany from 100 years ago with cities no longer inside Germany's borders like Danzig are included. Highly recommended

a thoughtful exposition through narrative

This is a readable, if initially patchy, account of early biological evolution, strung together through a narrative of the author's career travels.

In early chapters the comparison of a cell to an ocean-going vessel is laid on a little thick as metaphors like "lapses in procedure" and the "Chartroom" tend to confuse the real information about cell biology, even to the point that the writer incorrectly terms DNA as a binary code (p 48). The narrative, tracing the evolution of cell organelles and subsequently of more complex life, is punctuated by references to "secrets" in order to allow the author to further convey tales of discovery. This is mainly enjoyable, if a little old school. A 1970s survey of the Sargasso Sea negotiates turbulent waters while hinting at possible ways that the nucleus and organelles are integrated into eukaryote cells, an underwater reef is charted while explanations of symbiotic mechanisms are recounted. Further chapters trace growing evidence of global warming and then the narrative also warms as the author introduces the great Lynn Margulis, pulling together the cell symbiosis theory of organelles in the chapter, The Mangrove Tree. Further accounts of science reveal the human side of discovery, from mistakes, hard work to apparent fraud, all portrayed warmly and reminiscent of Stephen Jay Gould's Wonderful Life. Some of the author's observations of Australia, in particular of water management practice, irked me slightly as supercilious, however his rendition of the landscape, characters and geology, again, compensate. Ironically, the Australian landscape tested the author's own water management credentials, almost tragically.

This review is not an attempt to flag all of the intriguing topics this book covers but rather to convey its flavour. The author is a fine story teller with any hint of rambling compensated for by good exposition of evolutionary biology, and facilitated by geographical and biographical raconteuring. His final chapter rounds off the `boring billions' hypothesis that he teased out throughout the book. But it is his "efficiency is fatal" corollary, told through an odd "Albert and Emily" story, which provides elegant and credible conjecture on the less considered risks to future human evolution, which wins Secret Chambers five stars.

much story with facts sprinkled in

This book is a mishmash; combining history, anecdotes, facts, and the adventures of the author. The facts are often explained by analogy; a very difficult way to learn something with any sense of accuracy.

I dislike such books, as I get bored with the stories (the history retelling is rather scatter shot in this book), and can never find my way back to some fact, as the book's organization does not allow it (the section titles are story based).

If you like reading non-fiction books for storytelling, with some interesting tidbits thrown in, this may be a book for you. If you want to learn much of anything about cellular biology, the supposed subject of this book, read something else.

About the Author
Steven Zemelman's newest Heinemann title is From Inquiry to Action, which combines two of his education passions: Choice-based inquiry approaches and civic action. Steve has worked in many capacities to promote the sustainability of innovative schools in Chicago. For eight years he directed the Center for City Schools at National-Louis University, and he is a founding director of the Illinois Writing Project. He has spearheaded the start of a number of innovative small high schools in the city. His experiences and research in these areas led to his Heinemann book 13 Steps to Teacher Empowerment, coauthored with Harry Ross. Steve has been a frequent collaborator with Harvey "Smokey" Daniels. They have coauthored seven books and videos with Heinemann, including Subjects Matter, Second Edition; Best Practice, Fourth Edition, and The Best Practice Video Companion; Content-Area Writing; Rethinking High School and its companion video; and A Community of Writers. These books are filled with practical strategies for making writing, reading, the content areas, and indeed the life of a school itself into a deeper and richer learning experience for kids. Zemelmen and Daniels are known for immediately useful teaching strategies that range from brief, easy-to-use reflections that help students learn right in class to bigger public-writing projects that can make school truly memorable for kids and teachers alike. This book is a must read for teachers, regardless of their position or experience. While reading the book, I felt like the authors were in the room with me, encouraging me to reflect upon my practices, challenging me to see beyond my group of students, and showing me how to take control of my own professionalism. It doesn't take long to read, and it isn't encumbered with difficult jargon. Read a chapter at at time, or read the whole book at once, either way you will easily reflect upon your own teaching situation, and you will come away from the book empowered with the affirmation you need to make a difference in your community and our profession.

I chose this book while deep in the trenches of impacting significant changes in schools and advocating for children. I love Stephanie Harvey! I found the forward very motivating. As an NBCT, I found the strategies for teacher empowerment to be absolutely effective and wish that all teachers were committed at this level.
I rated the book at the "Like it" level only because I am looking for tools that would help empower a teacher who is working with upper level administrators or even legislators. In some states and districts there are policies and practices that are inefficient or inadequate. Some changes need to be made beyond the buildings in which we work.
As an NBCT, I sincerely encourage anyone who is looking to begin their journey in local or schoolwide empowerment to read this book. If your are already an National Board Certified Teacher, this book may only be useful to you for sharing or mentoring newer teachers

About the Author
Florian Coulmas is Director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies, Tokyo. He has published widely in the field of sociolinguistics and is associate editor of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language. His previous books include Literacy and Linguistic Minorities (1984), Language Adaptation (Cambridge University Press, 1989), Language and Economy (1992), The Handbook of Sociolinguistics (1997) and Writing Systems (Cambridge University Press, 2003).
