About the Author
Laney Sammons, M.L.S., is an independent consultant and mathematics specialist. During her fifteen years teaching elementary school, she developed the Guided Math framework to provide mathematics instruction for the diverse learning needs of her students. She is currently involved in training teachers to use this framework in elementary classrooms around the country. She has presented at both state and national mathematics conferences.

Great Place to Start

Guided Math is all about how to set up a Math Workshop. If you're wondering how to move away from teaching math in a large group to something more differentiated, this book is a great place to start. It's especially accessible to those of us who may be more comfortable teaching reading and writing than math. The author uses the same principles and strategies we teach there and applies them to math, so terminology, research, even many of the books referenced are already familiar.

Guided Reading argues that we should teach math with the same framework so popular for Reading and Writing Workshops. And why not? The structures are proven to work. Unlike in some language arts books, this book clearly lays out the different aspects of the math workshop, exactly which kinds of teaching are best done in each segment, and why. It includes a helpful chapter on creating a rich math classroom environment. There is also an extensive section of ideas for math warm-ups -- those independent, interactive ideas suited for the first few minutes of school.

Therein lies the seed of my complaint about this book. The real question for many of us is "What will my kids be doing while I'm teaching small groups?" The answer here is -- centers -- with the usual list of ideas including games, math journals, computers, and activity sheets. Yet, to me, what the students do independently is the heart of the program. There's no discussion here of how to be sure our kids aren't just doing 'busy work'. While reading and writing, (the independent activities kids do during those workshops), are automatically authentic and purposeful, math pages and games aren't. Also, the recommendation for advanced students to move ahead in skills is mentioned, but there's no discussion of how a teacher can plan or keep track of groups learning different skills.

I am glad I purchased this book, (used.) It does provide a clear well-explained outline of how to organize a math workshop. It is also very strong in justifying why math should be taught this way. (Too strong, in fact. I got tired of reading about why small groups are such a good idea, etc.) Thus it's a good introduction, and would be an excellent book to share with teachers or administrators who aren't convinced math workshop teaching is the way to go. Beyond the basics, however, Guided Math does not go, If you're looking for a more detailed discussion of how to ensure authentic learning for all students, what valuable discussions or journal entries look like, or how to adapt a standard curriculum, you won't find that here.

Far too general

I was hoping for a thoughtful exploration of how to extend the principles of Guided Reading to math. The author references Fountas & Pinnell and argues that teachers should move away from whole-group and toward a more differentiated small-group structure during math instruction. However, she is pretty vague about the details. If you look at Guided Reading, the authors are very specific about not only what you should do but how you might do it. Here, the details are only superficially addressed: "Meet with small groups. Organize math games. Keep math journals. Do warm-up activities." This might be somewhat helpful if you are a brand new teacher; otherwise, save your money.

About the Author

Eric M. Anderman is Professor of Educational Psychology at The Ohio State University.� A former middle and high school teacher, Dr. Anderman has conducted research on academic motivation for the past 20 years, having focused much of his research on the applications of empirical research on motivation for students and practitioners. Besides co-authoring Classroom Motivation, his other books include: The International Guide to Student Achievement (with John Hattie, published by Routledge in 2012), Psychology of Academic Cheating (with Tamera Murdock, published in 2006 by Elsevier), and Psychology of Classroom Learning (with Lynley Anderman, published in 2009 by Cengage).

Lynley H. Anderman is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at The Ohio State University. Her research has focused primarily on the interplay between social and instructional influences on students’academic motivation. A former elementary/middle school teacher, Dr. Anderman is widely-published on topics including: students’ sense of school belonging, social motivation, and the ways teachers create classroom environments that support students’ motivation and engagement.

A good introductory read.

I ordered this book for an Education course I was taking in college. It contains a lot of useful information about student motivation as it pertains to school and learning (as the title suggests), although maybe not as in depth as I would have hoped.

If you are a student in a Teaching program, it would be a good introduction into some terminology and definitions regarding student motivation. However, if you are a seasoned professional, it probably won't offer you much insight.

Although it is an easy read, it is a little bit sterile. The examples given in the book seem a bit lackluster and not really engaging.

This book was a present from an old friend on my 60th birthday... I loved the cover and I have to say this is a great book. Such terrific life, and the adventures Mr. Drake has had.. .. Growing up in England and then London in the 60's .. I had almost forgotten about all the great times I had during this period in New York and this book sort of rekindled all those memories and adventures I had. A perfect book for anyone interested in this time period, plus it was just an all around good read. I would recommend it to anyone who just wants to sit and read a good book or anyone about to go on the road .. Young or old this book is a gem.

This textbook offers foundational guidance on issues related hyperbaric documentation, indications for treatment, patient care, staffing considerations, patient assessment, patient education, regulatory adherance, facility safety and various patient evaluation techniques such as transcutaneous tissue oximetry and laser doppler flowmetry.
It has long been recognized that the quality of care for the hyperbaric patient is dependent on a team of professionals working together for the good of the patient. This textbook clearly demonstrates that many of the common issues that contribute to quality of care have been evaluated from a number of perspectives: medical, technical, safety and now, nursing. The team is now complete.
I congratulate the authors for producing a seminal document that will help standardize the practice of hyperbaric nursing around the world.

Excellent Resource

Hyperbaric Nursing is an indispensable resource for anyone active in or wanting to enter the fields of hyperbarics and wound care. Clear, concise and practical, the reference will be dog-eared from constant use. It is also a great tool for studying for the Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT) or Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN) exams. I highly recommend this book for nurses, physical therapists, physicians or techs.
