Unique perspective of the holocaust

From the moment you meet Jill's relatives, you are drawn to them. They are much like my own relatives whose lives have been taken because of the same man's wrath. This book is not just a story. It's what happened. You will learn things that you never knew from people who actually experienced the horrors. The fact that most of Jill's family stayed strong and survived and came out and were able to do what their dreams were (marry the men of their dreams), says a lot about endurance and hope. What is important at one moment suddenly is pointless the next. It's being together and having food. That's it. Fighting through the horrors of all that they endured with the hope of one day going home to be together. That's how they survived. I learned a lot from you, Jill. Thank you for writing this book about your family. Of course I have read several books on the holocaust. It's in me to know. I'm glad you opened my eyes to what happened to your family and thousands of others.
Yes, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of this book. It's history. It's love. It's family. Thank you.

an important story to read, engagingly written.

I just put down the last pages and have been so moved by the character and resilience of the author's family. It has been hard at some times to pick the book back up because of its tragic and confronting story. I came to the point of thinking that if the family have the fortitude to tell these events then it is incumbent on me to take it all in and finish. In this I was aided by how deftly the author has managed to interweave historical narrative, fact and memory, as well as the promise that despite the odds the family comes through the other side, though this is always framed in homage to those who did not. I would recommend this to anyone interested in that strange duality of human nature amplified in brave and honest recollections of the Holocaust.

Harrowing, beautiful and deeply human

I'm grateful to have met the author and found this beautiful and haunting memoir. It's at once terrifying yet impossible to put down. Transported across 70 years, the people and the story feel very real and immediate. Through extensive interviews with her family, and journal excerpts, Jill Klein shares this mesmerizing story. This is not only an astonishing memoir, but an important contribution to history.
