Creative persuasion

An unusual title published by the British Museum Press though it is published in conjunction with an exhibition of the contents in 2013. One tends to think of the Museum covering antiquities rather than creativity in recent decades. Author Mary Ginsberg contributes an interesting illustrated overview of Asian propaganda covering the first seventy-five years of the last century. This doesn't just cover the usual communist Forward to the Future type of graphics but includes work from India, Pakistan and Japan. On page 103 there is a poster for the 1964 XVIII Olympics held in Japan.
The exhibition had a wide range of material: posters; ceramics; currency; games; cartoons; decorated clothing; magazines, figurines; badges and more. This is probably the strength of the book because it covers propaganda in the widest possible way.
Though the title is excellent as far as it goes I was rather disappointed (so four stars) that there wasn't more content. Museum catalogues obviously have an inherent flaw in that they mostly show only what is an exhibition, in this case sixty-eight items (that doesn't include forty or so images in the front of the book essay). If this was a non-exhibition book about the subject there would be a lot more content, Prestel have published several books about North Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese poster art that each has well over a hundred images and Taschen have published a book of Chinese posters with more than three hundred. Admittedly these have a very specific editorial theme rather than a general look at Asian propaganda, however the book is excellent as far as it goes.

This beautiful book is indeed both highly attractive and informative as it explores the pervasive presence of propaganda in Asian cultures. A wonderful addition to the buyer's library. Clearly Ms. Ginsberg is a most talented student of the subject and a fine educator at the same times.
